Isn't anyone just a teeny weeny bit curious about this thing? I did not invent it, I just duplicated it with 100% sceptiscism! I really would like some ideas on how it works. It is still churning away after 6.6 hours! Feeling undrewhelemed by the response.sad

I expect it will stop when the button cell is exhausted.

Trouble is, I can see no reason why it works at all without a commutator! The button cell will not get exhausted because it is not connected! The top bearing rests on the negative pole, but the wire rotator does not touch either the steel spacers, or the magnets. There is no closed circuit – no current is flowing! However, it will not work if the battery is not there! It is a complete mystery to me! I have never heard of DC making anything rotate without some sort of commutator. Just had another look, and it is still going after 8.75 hours!

face 1It didn't cost anything – already had the magnets.cool

Since then, have made several more and getting better at it each time. My wife made a splendid little spiral one that really whizzes round!thumbs up

My latest has a revolving battery (AA cell).

These things are really habit forming!face 7

After a lifetime of mediocracy, I don't think I could cope with success!!!indecision

As in the words of Robert Service, ( from my hometown of Preston).

I wanted the gold and I sought it,

I scrabbled and mucked like a slave,

Was it famine, or scurvy, I sought it,

But I hurled my youth to the grave.

I wanted the gold and I got it!

Came out with a fortune last fall,

But somehow life's not what I thought it,

                            And somehow, the gold isn't all!face 8

                                A perpetual motion boat

                                perp motion.jpg

The battery drives the motor and turns the propeller, as the boat moves through the water it rotates the paddle wheel which powers a generator to charge the battery.

But of course the wheel does not provide sufficient energy to replace the current drawn by the motor.

It does remind me of an intriguing concept in an old Model Maker plan whereby a catamaran has mounted on it an airscrew at an angle connected to a waterscrew at the other end of a shaft. The question was whether the force of the wind turning the airscrew would be sufficicent to provide sufficient power for the waterscrew to push the craft directly into the wind.

I've no idea whether it worked – one for Ashley maybe?

I had also though of a windmill on deck, coupled to the propeller shaft. It probably would work, but it would not be something for nothing, because it would be the wind driving it, and if the wind stopped, the contraption would stop as well!

The motor draws 2amps and the generator charges at 2amps so if the boat starts off with a fully charged battery it should run forever.

I wasn't suggesting it was a perpetual motion machine Bob, just wondering if it could travel into the wind, and if so, what the relative sizes and pitches of the air and waterscrews should be and how much wind would be needed.

Re perpetual motion, this machine still appears to guard its secrets:
