I plan to build from scratch two Fishing boats in woodmmmtgse30ohgfcmmjhwmcrq.jpg

The scale is 1" =1foot so the model will be 39" long.

What i want to know is what size and type of motor i will need for this size of model

          Hello David

          Welcome to the forum.

I'm currently at the design /scratch build stage too although mine is for a working boat under sail.

I think the others may appreciate some extra details such as beam, estimated finished weight and draught etc if possible before venturing advice on motors.

If it were me, I would probably go for a brushed motor with a NiMh or gel-cell type battery. However, the experts may disagree – I would go with their advice primarily.

          Happy modelling,

          Dave C

            Hi David,

They look like interesting craft, do you have drawings yet ? motor wise I would look at an 850 size brushed driving a 2 1/2" prop and a sealed lead acid SLA battery, as you will need some ballast.

            Keep us posted, Regards Ray

I have approx drawings but that just for the Mock up .Until i can go and see the last one still arround and take some measurments i wont go much further in the pre build . Its 39` long beam is !0`9" draft 3.6"They will be heavey as the frames will be oak and planking in pine

Assuming that they are intended to go like fishing boats, something like a 540LM, or a 545, run on about 3/4 the volts on the label driving a prop about the same diameter as the motor can.

A heavy SLA battery helps with ballast, on the other hand a lighter battery such as a NiMh lets you put the ballast where it is needed and gives more opportunity to choose the voltage that you prefer.

Building heavy is not always the best option – there was a case in one of the magazines many years ago where the builder had a fixation with ultimate strength. He was upset when he found that it floated below water line before any working bits were added, and that rather than a working model, he had a rather nice display only one.

There's a guy on the Model Boats web-site who is building the very same boats. He may be able to help! wink
