Hello Greg,
It sounds like you are mainly interested in warships : the Confederacy period through to WWII ?
Of course, this would bring in the "Ironclads" as well as the wooden ships of the period. The transition from here forwards is, therefore, a gradual change-over from wood to metal. (Flying splinters accounting for many injuries with wooden ships….).
I expect during WWII, there would still have been wooden Dutch trawlers and river barges etc. but, the majority of 'armed' ships would surely have been metal-hulled. The transition from sail to steam power also accompanying this era. "SS Great Britain" – a sort of 'hybrid' you might say.
I'm no historian, but I'd have thought the internet /public libraries /museums etc. would be very good for research material. From here you could search for plans (eg "Sarik"
and other kits of possible interest.
Good hunting,
Dave
