      Hello,

My name is Greg and I am new to static wooden ship building. I have joined the forum for future help and advice. I am at the moment building my first kit which is OcCre's kit Polaris. I would like to ask a question of the members. Does anyone know of static wooden ship kits that are from the eras of the United States Civil War, WWI or WWII? They can be of any type. The scale I would prefer would be around 1:60. If anyone does know of any manufacturer please would they send me details.

      Best regards,

      Greg

              Hello Greg,

It sounds like you are mainly interested in warships : the Confederacy period through to WWII ?

Of course, this would bring in the "Ironclads" as well as the wooden ships of the period. The transition from here forwards is, therefore, a gradual change-over from wood to metal. (Flying splinters accounting for many injuries with wooden ships….).

I expect during WWII, there would still have been wooden Dutch trawlers and river barges etc. but, the majority of 'armed' ships would surely have been metal-hulled. The transition from sail to steam power also accompanying this era. "SS Great Britain" – a sort of 'hybrid' you might say.

I'm no historian, but I'd have thought the internet /public libraries /museums etc. would be very good for research material. From here you could search for plans (eg "Sarik&quot and other kits of possible interest.

              Good hunting,

              Dave

You could also try Model Expo in Florida USA – online – might well be something to suit there.
