Having recently worked in Glouscester i had as chance to have a look at the British Waterways Museum as was greatly dissapointed to see one old boat in a very bad state of disrepair but i was also supprised to see a concrete hull very unusal construction . Whilst working in Sainsburys in Gloscester quays i managed to see several narow boats .

I have also seen the concrete hulls at Glouscester and they appear to have been cast in a mould. There are still hulls made of concrete but they are made by first fabricating a frame of chicken type wire netting and then sprayed with a wet concrete mixture. Where I live near the river Trent a Catamaran was built using this method. A few years ago a huge concrete Jetty was built up on Tynside and floated down to Immingham as a new ship berth.

There are, or at least were, several conrete barges in London on `t Thames. Certainly very recently. Ashley

Concrete yachts were not uncommon before the introduction of GRP. They were reinforced with a sort of chicken wire I think and were pretty tough. Insurers didn't like them much though as most were amateur built and it was impossible to see how well they had been built from the outside.

And of course they needed pebble dashing occasionally…

The use of concrete to make barges and floating docks had its brief moment of fame during the Normandy landings. Some of the barges are still in the Manchester Ship Canal near the M6 viaduct.
