Award-winning steamboat modeller Martin Ranson, describes some modifications and improvements since his original article published in Model Boats, June 2005.
I have a lot of problems trying to find the right information regarding the pressures of boilers and gas tanks that are required before they can be used, everyone I have asked semm to have differant ideas.
Do you think that you could say what the correct situation may be. Thank you for you attension Gordon
Boilers should be pressure tested no matter how large or small. normally this is done hydraulically by pumping water into the boiler until it bursts or a safety pressure is achieved. Normally if the boiler is made from good guage metal soldered together with silver solder or brazed it will handle the pressure needed to run a reasonably free running piston cylinder and flywheel assembly. I test my boilers by pressurising them with a footpump and water until my safety valve opens. Safety valves can be made or bought,,and I would recommend testing them thoroughly until you are completely satisfied that if the extreme pressure is reached, the steam will blow off in a controlled way safely. There’s nothing nicer than a boat chugging along with that lovely swishing sound of the steam exhaust. I love it
best of luck. Mike D
