The 2014 Model Engineer website is now up and running: **LINK**

As usual, the venue will be Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher, Surrey.

Some exciting new marine models are promised for this year including a stand from our own Ashley Needham featuring his fascinating unconventional models.

Boat modellers are also very much encouraged to enter your work into the exhibition, there is a Loan Class purely for displaying models if you prefer not to enter the competition classes. Either way it gives a great opportunity to share your work with the general public and maybe encourage new entrants into our hobby. You also get a free pass to the show!

Full details for entering models or just visiting the show are available on the website link above. There are reduced admission prices for tickets bought prior to 28th November.

Glad to see that the Southern Dandy is showing his collection of boats craft models inventions and will be providing some light relief from the more serious engineering models that will be on display.

To far away for me and its a slog getting the horse and cart for a lift to the stage coach stop at Warrington.

The way things are going I will soon need a passport to leave Cheshire for next years Haydock show (Independence for Cheshire Campaign)

              Hi Ash,

was there last year, and bumped into Colin too, literally as he was studiously ignoring my waving and shouting! I like the Engineering shows, lots of other stuff to get in on, and always lots of active displays – not like some very static boat shows, where all you see are circles of tables about a huddle of seated modellers drinking tea (from a flask) and eating sarnies (from foil wrap).

And as for a "horse and cart", luxury, we can only manage a log and stick to paddle it!

I'll try and arrange travel to coincide (accidentally of course) with that weekend, we're due to the great smoke about then.

I will obviouslky have to bring along more signed copies of my photo that originally envisaged!! (two at least).

I have been surfing for pictures from the various shows to see what the pro-forma is for displaying models, and mostly it appears to be "put them on the table with a notice on/besides them". I suspect that most of the pictures on the web are ones of show/judging craft and so clarity of model is of the utmost however that is not for me.

The Ashley table will be "dressed" for the occaision, and I am in the process of collecting certain items and materials to make the table jolly interesting, although the lack of height may be an issue making the display a bit flat. I have ideas regarding this though, especially as there will be a pair of flying boats on the stand….

One issue may be the weight of the Lotus on the table.. I hope they can cope with the concentrated weight.

Ashley Will a sailors hat be a step too far????

Not if it gives you the bit of extra height you say you need Ashley!

Seriously, I'm very much looking forward to your stand which I'm sure will go down well with the public, particularly the Top Gear models.

I've already got an unsigned photo and some of the Hover van as yet not published!

Sky hooks for the planes? I think the boats are always up stairs, so the ceiling is lower. Maybe you can also do some G&S "With cat like thread?" or "HMS Pinafore" that way you can add in your musical abilities too.

I once danced a sailors jig in a school production, many, many years ago, "Pirates of Pen….."

Kimmo. Now the DUCK story can be revealed !! I can get rid of the blackmail material (for a price).

hanging the planes up would be novel but not sure about the layout of the tables and so on, I have an alternative.

I laid out some sheets on the lawn to suss out the boat display order and it is a bit cramped…I will have to ask the man for another table!! (3 then) …although they all fit on (leaving off the Alvis) it is tight for a pleasing aesthetic.

The idea for more height looks good, using various…items….and is a goer.

Lighting next.. the clip on Ikea bendy LED spots are warm white, and although a healthy 3W each, will not be brilliant enough…. I may have to improvise.

Effectively ,yes you would but not so far round as I drove on it yesterday and the day before. It's almost a 4 hour drive from Mablethorpe though at 173 miles according to the AA route planner.

M25 isn't bad really, it's just that if you hit it at the wrong time you can spend rather too much time admiring the scenery. But if you happen to be near Heathrow then the landing and taking off airliners do provide an entertaining distraction.

There is more work than meets the eye to this exhibiting lark. i now need some boards to display posters on..and luckily Mum has just the thing in the garage…boards made from that display hardboard stuff…you know, the one with holes in it. They stand on legs and were leant against the railings and used to hang Mums paintings on when she exhibited on the tow path with the Molesey art society.

BUT having retrieved them from the garage we find they were all bent (from being a bit damp) and so I had to water them and hold them flat to straighten, and then I have to paint them a nice shade of Blue. AND THEN make some more legs so they will be like an easel and stand up on their own.

THEN everything has to be boxed for transport and these boxes need making, fitting out and will need painting….and the various display items have to be made and tested for lookness and brilliance.

I would like to lay it all out and tweak it for balance and so on, but there is not sufficient room here..I am going to have to be artistic on the day. I will have the thursday evening to make or modify anything if it comes to it. Luckily as well, christmas is approaching, as I will be needing some tinsel….

Poor Proj No1 is on the back burner. It would be in any case at the moment as I am lacking some lettering and it needs spraying, for which the days have been either cold and/or damp.

All set up.Looks ok. Ends of tables unsatisfactory due to the clampy bits that hold the spotlight stick up..they stick out a bit and the cloth obviously wont fold round the. Cant see what else to do so it will have to stay as is.

Some phenominal boats being set up upstairs!! wow.
