I think it's a bit unfair to describe buying a subscription as a rip off! You do get 13 issues of dedicated model boating content! The archive is there to encourage people to subscribe, I'm afraid this is a commercial operation, not a charitable organisation! All these articles that people like to read need to be written, the authors need to be paid and production costs have to be covered. Nothing is truly free.

The back issue you need is still available here: **LINK** so hopefully this will meet your needs.

              Regards

First thank you very much I have just bought the copy BUT I still think it is wrong that you need to subscribe just to be able to ascertain if an article is available in the archive let alone Buy it I was not looking for a freebie so how do you justify that

I;m sorry but Asking at least £20 by subscribing to enable browsing lists is pathetic

by the way I do buy the magazine most months depending whats in it

If you take a look here **LINK** then you will find all the more recent covers and contents of the magazine freely available. You only need to subscribe if you want to read the articles themselves.

                  Hope this helps,

                  Colin

If you look at the top of the page you will see a link to Features and one of the sub headings is Covers and Contents. Also in this Forum, under the Feedback heading the topic of Covers and Contents is at the head of the list. So perhaps not too difficult to find really if you have a look around the site.

We hope that visitors will browse the site looking for items which interest them but obviously we can't anticipate everyone's specific requirements and make them major Home Page headings or links. We do try to make the site as informative as possible but this is a commercially sponsored website and MyTimeMedia are predominantly in business to sell magazines, either in hard copy format or via digital subscriptions so archive records, while present, are not seen as being quite as important as encouraging visitors to take out subscriptions or buy the magazine. As freelance Website Editor this seems a reasonable balance to me while the Forum facility, which offers a platform for discussion on model boating matters, is something which is not offered by our competitors.

I think there is a misunderstanding here as the subscription that I referred to is the yearly subscription to purchase the magazine direct from My Hobby Store, this subscription also includes access to the digital archive and entry into the frequent online competitions.

I find the subscription to be excellent value especially as the magazine is delivered direct to my door, usually 3 or 4 days before it arrives in the shops and always in perfect condition.

I have no problems just subscribing to the magazine

Sorry Editor well have to agree to disagree but thanks again for finding it for me

I don't want to unduly protract the discussion but I still don't quite understend the point you are making.

The is no 'list' of articles as such, the production of indices to the magazines was discontinued many, many years ago, long before the digital age.

A list of the contents of the magazines going back to 2009 is freely available in the Features section which is readily accessible to anyone browsing the website. This was introduced to make it easier for people to locate articles which they may be particularly interested in. You can then buy a copy of the relevant issue, the article itself or if these are not in stock then ask on the Forum if anyone has a copy of what you are looking for.

The digital editions go back a further two years when the magazine was initially digitised but when you access those, you are not getting a 'list' of articles but full access to the content of each magazine or in other words all the back issues since the digitised versions became available. These have a commercial value as evidenced by the fact that you can purchase hard copies of many of these issues where they have not already sold out. As you will appreciate, MyTimeMedia is not a charity but a commercial concern.

In an ideal world there would be a searchable index going back to the year dot, but the reality is that Model Boats magazine has been subject to a number of changes of ownership over the past 20 years and the priority of the owners in each case has been to sell magazines rather than devote resources into building up archival records where the cost of doing so will never be covered by the income from enquiries. We might wish it was otherwise but commercial considerations prevail.

In the meantime, there are a number of members of this Forum with magazine collections who are usually very happy to help out people with genuine enquiries relating to articles in historical issues of the magazine. They do give their time for free.

What makes the subscription really worth while is the free entry into the frequent competitions that Colin organises.

In the past the prizes have been decent enough but I believe the next competition will have some exceptional prizes ranging from an all expenses paid holiday at the exclusive Casa Carolina, an open top trip on the Virgin Galaxy, a golfing experience on the Challenger course in the first class Mariana resort and a book of discount vouchers for Suttons & Roberts in London.

This subscription is really well worth the money (and you get a free magazine)

But what will the website donation be for the upcoming Easter competition?

Its time to open that shed and get out a few of the freebies that you guys have been hoarding away for the past few years

Seriously – actually Paul, there are not masses of freebies in the shed!

New kits, which are few and far between these days, when supplied for review, go to the reviewer to build and do an article for MB. They naturally keep the model.

Books and other samples generally go straight to the reviewer who does the necessary for Test Bench and keeps them as payment for his time.

So, sorry the cupboard is bare as received kits/books etc. are used to generate content for the magazine, which incidentally underpins this website and forum.

Generally no free lunches I'm afraid although I must confess that I was provided with sandwiches when I attended a recent course on airbrushing for a forthcoming article. Must remember to declare that to HMRC on my tax return….

Model Boats / Model Maker there have been 749 issues not including the specials, are you suggesting there should be a searchable index for all of them ?

I know that shed is the wrong description for your storage facility I would also say that cupboard doesn't fit the bill………………….to call it a hanger would be a more apt. If no kits or books are there any of those nice Radio Control sets left or some of the current batch of modellers tool kits?

                                                Paul,

The freebies with subscription offers are ordered to meet the number of people taking up the offer so no spares I'm afraid. That's why they are not always sent out immediately. MTM don't try to guess how many they might need as you would never get it right!
