Having just subscribed to the magazine i wondered what made me choose model boats as opposed to marine modelling , i often see both publications in the newsagents while im acting as donkey for the wifes shopping trips but usually only buy model boats , as im sure you will all agree they are both a good read , so honestly what makes you choose one or the other ?

      Regards Andy

IMHO MMI doesn’t adequately cover the main interest of most of our customers i.e. scale electric R/C boats. As such there is little point in us either buying or advertising in it. Speaking as both a trader and a modeller MB is superior in every department.
Now I’ll wait for the howls of protest!!

I subscribe to both magazines – they’re both excellent, with  articles of interest in both publications.  A point mentioned by Mr. Milbourn regarding MB  –  they seem to concentrate on scale electric models.  Fine, but that’s not all I’m interested in –  MMI has a greater range of interests for me – sailing, international, power, ic, tech, etc.  Not living in GB I’m also not terribly interested in club meetings and reviews which are of limited interest to overseas readers.
The OMRA section seems to consist of a series of fairly similar photos of fairly similar boats and must appeal to a limited readership.
I do love Keith Juliers articles plus the incomparable Glynn Guest!
This is a personal opinion – as I said I subscribe to both magazines and will continue to do so.  I am just a bit more excited when MMI lands in my postbox!

Please no flames – I really am not interested in defending my preferences – they’re mine and mine only!

I think that they’re both excellent magazines, but I do the same as The Long Build.

There’s not a word in your note with which I would take issue – it just shows that we are all different and that there’s therefore no such thing as “the best” magazine for everyone.

I have to say that I rarely buy either, as the majority of the content is of no interest to me. I always flick through them when they appear in the newsagents and, if anything grabs me, then I buy – but it doesn’t happen often.

Please don’t see this as a criticism of either magazine. The model boating hobby covers such a wide variety of interests that any publication that attempts to cater for everyone must  by definition treat parts of he hobby superficially. The fact that both magazines are still in business proves that they must be doing something right.

                          Rick.

I thought it was Jedi Master Yoda, but you may be right – it’s pretentious enough for the Moody Blues!
