Now this could be a lot of fun, something along the lines of poking Kim Jong-un with a stick but not as dangerous.

      yes

            Hello Captain

Nice to see you posting again and I am glad that the day went well.

            Regarding having your say:

A new section has appeared at the bottom of the Forum page which heralds the start of a potentially fun filled series of discussions. The announcement doesn't seem to belong to anyone but whoever is starting it must have an affinity with our biblical chum Daniel.

All in all it promises to enliven our little group

            Paul

Just found it. "Graham in the lions' den?" We shall see.

Does Graham know what he is in for?

Do you think we should warn him?

I suspect he does, but let's try to be kind to the chap – at least until he's got his feet under the Editorial desk.

I am always kind and understanding but I can't speak for the other protagonists, for example there is that chap who used to run a model boat electronics company….he tends to call a spade a shovel and seldom takes prisoners but I have heard that he has mellowed.

Does this thread count as being kind? wink

I am sure you will all be welcoming to Graham as new editor. Naturally he will want to put his own stamp on the magazine and forum but he is anxious to maintain continuity with Paul Freshney's successful stewardship and he has my full support.

I am only online intermittently for the next week as this is coming to you from a Nile cruiser en route to Aswan. Be jealous!

                        Hi Colin,

JealousI am…..Ah yes, those dulcid evenings with the campfires burning to cook dinner, and strains of the Iman wafting over the mosquitoes. Washing your Donkey in the river at dawn. Do they still have a 50 calibre machine gun behind the screen on the top deck of those cruise ships?

                        Happy days.

                        Ron.

                          Hi Colin

I am sure that all the chaps will support Graham in the same way that we supported Paul and in the same way that we continue to support you.

Another holiday….Have you got one of those fabled money trees in your garden?

Your talk of Aswan brings back memories; a group of us were contracted by Arup in 1997 to review the life expectancy of Aswan High Dam. The Egyptian Government were concerned about its stability due to the fact that as it is just a simple gravity (rock fill) structure and the methods of construction used for the original core structure.

We concluded that the dam had exceeded its safe working life and recommended a series of remedial works to strengthen the main structure.

As far as I know these remedial works were carried out but I keep on expecting to see on the news that the dam has failed

We stayed at the nearby Aswan University which was very nice

                          Enjoy the views

Visited the Aswan High Dam today. Not given way yet. It is certainly a massive construction but I believe it is silting up and also raising the water table below it which is damaging the monuments.

                              Colin

The silting was never considered when the dam was conceived but has been having knock on effects ever since the mid 1970s, not only is the storage capacity of the dam becoming less each year with the resulting drop in water supply and electric production but the famous fertility of the Nile basin has dropped and the Nile delta is suffering from accelerated coastal erosion. Something that you can discuss at the Captains Table when you dine this evening.

How are you getting on with the dust?

I can remember two model boating Polls – John Poll and his lad James, who ran Model Power many moons since. I wonder what dey's a doin' dese days?

Perhaps we should conduct a straw poll to see if the members agree with polls?

                                    (65% for and 46% against)
