Thanks for replies. I am afraid it will not make the slightest bit of difference whether we are in the EEC or not. The rule is that anyone selling automatic digital downloads to any EEC country, is expected to pay them VAT!
Whether the largest countries, USA, Australia etc will go along with this is another matter, and digital sellers are already fighting hard against this. I even wonder if it can be enforced.
It is not the thought of paying the VAT that bothers me unduly (although I don't like the idea), but I am certainly not prepared to go to all the trouble of submitting four VAT returns each year for a small number of sales.
At the moment, I am still undecided about what to do. I do enjoy writing, but don't have the patience to wait for articles to be published, now that Conway Maritime's Shipwright has ceased to exist, (I wrote regularly for them since 1978) especially as there is very little interest in my specific field, (miniature merchant ships 1850 – 1965).
I toyed with the idea of writing some books along the lines of the late David R. MacGregor's Merchant Ship series, but preliminary enquiries showed that there is almost zero interest in late 19th century, early 20th century sail, these days. For several weeks I have been watching 21 MacGregor books on Ebay, all offered as Buy it Now at rock bottom prices and not a single one has sold. These are all books that years ago, I was paying the teens of pounds each for! Now they are hawking them for, in many cases, less than four pounds, with free delivery!
