It;s working now, but apparently there has been a server problem – again.

I don't know much about the workings of set ups for the infrastructure of forums, but I wonder if Mayhem is a victim of its own success and popularity, I assume these servers are else where and unless you are prepared to spend big money at it you have to contend with what you can afford, as Mayhem is funded by Martin and any donations there is not a lot he can do.

O dear. £550 spent on a server and software upgrade and it's down yet again. Poor old Martin must be at his wit's end.

I still read the Mayhem forum regularly although I've not contributed anything for a while now. I find that either my lack of experience or interest in the subject precludes me from making any useful comment. Alternatively whatever I might otherwise have written has been already said too often to bother repeating (See BEC, prop rotation with twin motors, BEC, battery capacity and charging, current rating of speed controllers – and did I mention BEC?).

            It's all rather sad.

You're quite right Dave when you say the same old questions keep coming up, either through ignorance of the workings of forums, or sheer laziness. I tend to favour the latter. Why bother to search when you can simply ask the question – again? It can be quite frustrating, even infuriating, when someone asks a question that has been asked and answered many times before, simply because he can't be bothered looking.

I, and many others, respect your knowledge on model boating, particularly as regards electrickery, but it must be extremely annoying to give advice then have it either ignored or disputed.

I hope you will continue reading Mayhem, because it's people such as yourself that make it such a great resource – and I didn't even mention BEC (until now)laugh

              Peter.

Thanks, Peter. I shan't ignore your posting here because you're one of the few people on Mayhem who do appreciate the process of reading a question properly and making a sensible reply to it – and the effort which goes into that. There's already enough of my alleged wisdom in my previous posts on Mayhem and my article on this website to answer 99% of the questions which might be in my purview. I have now begun to use the Private Message system to reply to sensible and properly-written questions on Mayhem; the vexatious, lazy or badly-written ones can be left to others. As far as this forum is concerned, however, I've no intention of changing my posting habits at all!

                Keep the faith.

BEC, one of Dave Milbourn's pet hates. He advocates a separate battery for the receiver, whereas ESCs equipped with BEC use the main battery for the receiver's power. Given Dave's expertise in the field of electronics his opinion deserves to be respected, and his recommendations followed. If you need a technical explanation I'm sure Dave would be pleased to answer any sensible questions on the subject. Or you could always look it up on Mayhemsmiley

Yes, he might indeed, as I believe it's one of Dave's own circuit diagrams, which are excellent.

Guilty – I wrote that article and drew the diagrams. I don't HATE BEC; in fact I use BEC speed controllers in all my current boats (just try finding a brushless ESC without it!). If you know what you're doing then there's no reason why your model shouldn't use it, although I question its application in larger models where a separate Rx battery would be a better and safer option. I dislike BEC as a concept only because it causes so much confusion among beginners and gives rise to some dreadful twaddle from those who should know better. As I've often said, if it really was rocket-science then I'd run a mile from it!

BTW if Dr Thomason didn't already know full well what BEC stands for then I shall eat plywood for breakfast. He's such a tease

My late, great boss Roy Meads had a recipe for chub which involved tying the fish between two pieces of plywood and poaching it in white wine with a selection of vegetables – then removing the string, throwing the fish away and eating the plywood…
