I  know  today, it’s a time for celebration for all those of Irish extraction amongst our members, but please spare a thought for all those involved in the RNLI and especially those from the Orkney Islands.

 

This day 40 years ago, the Longhope Lifeboat was lost with all 8 crewmen whilst on a mercy mission to a Liberian cargo ship.

 

May God bless them and their families, always.

We would all do well to remember that the some subjects of our safe little hobby are actually serious craft that are crewed by selfless heroes who are willing to risk their lives to help total strangers.

It does us well to remember that on any day memories from one person to another may differ tremendously.  Statistically it is a fact that a much higher percentage of the population pass away around December so it always makes me think that thier families views of Christmas must differ quite considerably to every one elses.

To me, as a still active seafarer, the members of the RNLI are a grossly underrated group of people and every single one of them you come across are incredibly genuine, dedicated and selfless people.  The last time I spoke to some was manning a little souvenier shop in Siloth.  Two lovely old ladies of quite considerable years giving thier time to man the shop for no other reward than the conversation with the odd customers they may get.  I thoroughly enjoyed having a chat with them and purchased a number of items I really didn’t need!!
