Josh. Unfortunately I live in the South and cant help in your quest. Our local boating pond is handy slow toddle with a boat perched on my Zimmer frame (being an old geezer)
Boating in the real ocean has a few issues, convering rampant corrosion to any and all metal parts inside and out, unless flushed with clean water (and no doubt those who boat regularly on the ocean will dispute this but I have has isssues on the few times I have salt water boated with a couple of boats), and secondly the boats themselves need to be able to handle the sort of swell that you just don't get on a pond.
Joining your local club may be a good idea, for the use of the water and also the advice you can obtain and practical advice..looking at actual boats and seeing the method of operation and so on.
