          Bob,

I can remember building a Revell kit 'Hawaiian' Pilot some years ago which looks very similar. Are they the same type/class of cargo ship. From what I remember of the plastic kit, it was C3, Matson Line. Remember reading about Hawaiian Pilot ramming and sinking one of her sister ships (can't remember the name), caused quite an environmental clean up headache.

Are you making a static model of the John Tyler?

Yes, they were C3s, but a later version.    Not planning on building a model of it. I took the photograph in Houston, Texas, as she sailed past us. I built the plastic Hawaiian Pilot as well many years ago. I still have one lying around in my workroom. I built another of the class some years ago, Santa Catalina, and also have one in our permanent collection of the C3 cargo liner Rhodesia Star, my first ship and another C3.

Correction. John Tyler was not a C3, but slightly similar and rather later.

One of our club members, Michael Marks, built the Hawaiian Pilot using the plastic model as a reference. It was scaled up considerably, as can be seen from the photo, and sails beautifully.

That is a real beauty, and scaled up from a plastic model as well. I believe the Hawaiian Pilot was originally the White Squall. I obtained the plans of that ship years ago from the Smithsonian, USA, when I built the Santa Catalina that was another of the class.
