Took the model yacht Jenny for it's first sail in a long time this morning and took a couple of photographs.

Larry, you were asking about the sheeting system, hope these photographs help. Cabin/hatch removed for clarity.

        Hi Tony,

what a grand yacht, very nice indeed.

I've just spent 20 minutes reading the thread from start to here. A very neat instalation under the deck too.

Now be carefull, Colin will have you labelled a "yottie" too. I like to use jackstays and luff hooks for sails on restorations of older yachts, it makes taking the sails off easier as they're cotton and can suffer if put away damp from mould etc.

The small eyelets I get by the 100 from SAILSetc and they also have the die, washers and brass threaded eyes too. The larger eyelets I use for the tack, clew and head. Some of the modern brass eyes are weak and twist off so take care.

        Impressed I am, Kimosubby

A very strange and unusual setup, Tony……….But very neat and tidy, I hasten to add!

The removeable winch arm is very novel

You have the line from servo winch to the extreme end of the boom?…….This will drastically reduce the amount of swing……….Is that your intention?

A kicking strap would help restrict the lift of the boom

Apologies for giving unwanted advice, but I couldn`t control myself!………lol

Thanks for the comments on this one, The installation is crammed in a very small space with not much room. It is always worth going the extra mile to make the installations neat and tidy and it is annoying when at the lakeside to see so many models with untidy electrical, mechanical and control equipment workmanship. I plan to make smaller rx holder (next Autumn/Winter) as the one in the photographs is sized on a 40mhz 7channel rx whereas the new Opima 2.4ghz rx is a much smaller physical size. Temporary packing was used for this sailing session.

Bob, your advice on modifying the sail boom and fitting a kicking strap should make an excellent improvement and it will be well worth trying different positions for the booms eyelet position. The installation was carried out as Douglas McGhee's plan and build item, which is always a good basic starting point. The point which was problematic was the main sail's sheeting line which has a tendency to snag on the corner of the cabin. Some kind of a fitting on the deck with a small eyelet to hold the cord above the cabin would be helpful. The only deviation from Douglas's design is the conection between the sail servo and winch arm. The plan recommends a square tube to fit in a larger square on the servo, as I didn't have any square tube in stock, I came up with the round tube and small bolt idea.

Th model had been in storage for a while and a small amount of green verdigree has appeared around the bowsprit's brass fittings. This can only be caused by storage in a cold damp shed in the North of England. Whilst at the club comments were made as to how stable the balsa hull has remained whilst in storage. The hull was wrapped in fine denier ladies tight so this method has certainly had a test. Comments were also made as to how well the model sails upwind.

Thanks again for the comments and Kim, very much enjoying watching your 36R take shape.

Hi Larry,  WD40 will do the trick!

I've now got a nice black and white image of Jenny to use as a guide. From the MM2070 plan thats popped up below on this forum. It appears that in that image the sails are made from modernish type sail material.

Do you want cotton sails, or sail material sails? I can do either for you as I have enough in off cuts to make them from a dacron type material. I also have vintage cotton or nice white egyptian cotton.

Let me know and I'll set about them soon.

                              Aye, Kim.

PS and I've now a lovely large copy of your diagram as well on my desktop.
