            Hi Rod,

            Looking good so far ,

Make sure all ribs are sqare and plum fix the first planks at deck level ,

and keep checking spacing , this will stifen up frame work ,

leave for a day before you start on the rest of planking , and dont forget to put a slight chahmfer

on ribs towards bow stern , to get mas glue contact,…..fix planks on left and right side together

you will find that some planks will need a taper, hope this helps Larry….

                Hi All,

Latest news on my Jenny build. I have fitted the keel. I managed to get some lead shot from a local company that makes shotgun cartridges! I bought half a kilo, which was just enough to fill the keel. I mixed it with paint as suggested in the magazine article. I have notw filled the joint between hull and keel with car bidy filler, and am waiting for it to set before sanding down and getting ready to paint hte hull. Next step will be making and fitting the rudder, and installing radio gear.

After that, I will be making the deck. My plan is to make the deck from 1/32" ply, then plank over that. I have the ply, but still need to source the wood for planking. I have also got the material for the sails, I ordered "down proof cambric" as suggested in the sailmaking article for Jenny, looks nice too!

Now I will see if I can figure out how to upload photos, and I can then show my build so far!

                Cheers

.I now have some photos of my Jenny "so far":

                    img_20121229_193144.jpg

Here I have fitted the keel, and have applied cellulose putty around the join between keel and hull. Note that at this stage I have also fitted the rudder tube – this helped with lining up the keel squarly to the hull.

                    img_20121229_193246.jpg

This photo shows the inside of the hull, I applied a coat of polyester resin to the inside of the hull before sanding the outside to ensure the hull was stiff, and help seal the small gaps between some of the planks. Notice at the stern, the remnants of the stocking material impregnated with fibreglass resin, which is proving very tough to sand down.

                        Hi Larry,

Happy New year to you too, and to everyone else in the forums!

Thanks for the tips about planking, I like the idea of using coffee stirrers, I noticed the other day that Cafe Nero have those wood stirrers too, but didn't think ahead and take any with me!

I did manage to figure out the photo thing, as you can see from my post above!

Since I posted those pics, I have given Jenny her first coat of primer, waiting for that to dry thouroughly before sanding down and giving her a second coat. I used International paints metal primer as that is what I had in the shed, but it says on the tin that is makes an excellent barrier coat too, so should be OK, although the tin I have is around 15 years old at least! I had used some spray on filler primer from Halfords on the hull, as some of the stocking weave was still visible, but it didn't work very well, got a "crazed" finish all over, which is why I used the brush on primer. That has given me a much better surface finish now. Once it iis thoroughly dry, I will sand down and give it a second coat , then sand that down and apply some good quality brush-on enamel. I'm sure I have a tin of JapLaq enamel in British Racing green somewhere around

                        Cheers

                        Ricky

                          Hi all,

I have now given Jenny a second coat of primer, and started sanding down, should be ready for main coat in a day or so. Didn't find any paint in my shed that I liked the colour of, so I will be off to Boyes tomorrow to see if I can find some good quality enamel in a colour I fancy. Not sure what colour I am going to paint her yet, I am thinking either white or black, and red below the waterline, although a nice light blue above the waterline is also an option.

Next job, apart from painting, is to make and fit the rudder, and fit the radio gear. I have a Spectrum DX8 transmitter I use for flying, andI can use a 6 channel "Orange" receiver I have in my spares box. Seems abit overkill for a 2 channel sailboat, but it is the cheapest option. Just mulling over whether to use a ful size or mini servo for the rudder control. Not sure if there is much load on the rudder, so will probably try the mini servo, and use a full size for the sail control.

                          Cheers

                          Ricky

                            Hi all,

bit of a set-back over New Year I'm afraid, a boozed up friend and Jenny in the back of my car had a "coming together". Hull is damaged on both sides, planks broken and cracks in several places Although it may be possible to repair her, I am inclined to start construction again from scratch, I am sure I'll make a better job of it second time around. Due to current health issues, I will probably not get started again until lthe end of January. I'll keep everyone posted, and remember to take photos right from the start of construction this time round

In the meantime, I am thinkign of digging out a plan I have for a Thames sailing barge, constructed of styrene sheet.

                            Cheers

What is the problem with the sail rigging? Do you mean the standing rigging or the running rigging?

The running rigging is a bit complexe , thre again i not much good at sail rigs,

if i built it again i would let the sails free run and use rc rudder and it shows a small motor fitted,

to get out of trouble ….Larry//

                                      Hi Rod,

You can get lead from fishing tackel shops or dive centure shops ,

they use dive ballest bags , or lead flashing from build suplyers ,

or tap up a local plumber ,

as for rigging i use kite line on small sail boats , have look at the footy pages ,,,Larry..
