I went into my favorite model shop in Cardiff yesterday , and now the only one in Cardiff, and i was shown an e boat simuilar to mine but tis builder had extra features on his version namely larger props and rudders but what i liked was at the lick of a switch he could open the torpedo doors an flick the swtch the other way he could turn the front gunner .Really good i thought .Do you think there wiould be some way of firing the torpedos via either compressed air , by one of those soda syphon cartridges , or spring loaded .Food for thiought for future bulders !!!

Andy. I have a feeling that, to fire the torpedoes would require an unrealistic velocity of exit and they would look like missiles rather than torpedoes, especially as (assuming they are not WORKING torpedoes!) you would need to propell them for a distance or they would look silly.

My fave would be spring loaded, a reasonable enough spring could be situated in the tube and the torpedo held against this with a simple catch to be released by a servo , just think of any number of toys that fire missiles.

BUt..when you see films, the torpedo exits the tube with a "woosh!!" and plunges into the sea…rightly or wrongly, a torpedo launched from a model ship will go "ping" or "phzzzt" and depart with unseemly haste ruining the effect ??

Would be a crowd puller at the pond of course, the masses having no eye for realism whatsoever.

Perhaps, thinking about it (whilst typing) a slower exit could be arranged but the torpedoes could be expendable, ie, sink on release..this would give the impression of running underwater as of course they would dissappear from view, and the release would be better.

            Andy,

there is a youtube video (at least one) that I viewed some time ok and it showed an MTB, about 36",  being sailed on a canal. The modeller had made working torpedoes, yes complete with internal batteries and counter rotating propellers to drive them. His video showed them being fired towards himself from about 30 metres out and his sudden ducking down to catch each as it sped through the water to the canal side. They were fast and looked substantial. Not sure of his launching mechanism, but the engines engaged as soon as they left the pods. No sound Ashley, so cannot comment on a whether a "woosh or a plop"!

I'm sure a web search would turn it up, I was looking as I'm converting the PT-109 to r/c and want some extras to function – gun turrets and torp tubes rotating, but actually firing torpedoes, maybe not enough weight tolerance in the small hull. As it is I've almost used all weight up in fitting 3 x brushless motors with separate escs and a control board. Now making small rudders, larger than supplied but big enough to give some steerage, and using a single small servo.
