       Hi Neil

Having completed a 1/12th and a 1/16th Severn I’m looking for something to keep me off the streets this coming winter!

I’m seriously considering the Caldercraft Imara/Perseverance with electric power and having just spotted your superb model in the Mayhem forum I’d be glad of some reassurance before I part with £400+!

      Regards

      Brian

what sort of re assurance would you like Brian, other than it is a very nice model  to both build and sail, with plenty of detailing with tons of space inside if you go down the electric propulsion way.

it’s the third one I’ve built over the years, and have enjoyed building all of them.

Don’t put it off, get one bought.it’ll give you hours of enjoyment.

        neil.

          Hi Neil

Thanks for the reassurance, I’m definitely going for the Imara and if my building standards come anywhere near yours I’ll be more than happy!

          Regards

          Brian

              Hi Neil

Just been reading Colin Bishop’s review of the Imara in Model Boats July 1989.

Quite a few issues are described, I assume that they’ve all been resolved after nearly 20 years!

I’m only asking your opinion since you’ve built three Imara’s over the years

              Regards

              Brian

to tell you the truth, Brian,

I can’t remember what the issues were. I think one was the badly fitting( printed wheel house parts) wheel house and another was the awkwardness of fitting the sub deckin four parts, but I haven’t seen Colin’s review in many a year.

These days I just follow my nose and instinct.

Perhaps if you could tell me what you have, I’ll have a go for you.neil.

                  Hi Neil

Yes you’re right, the main issue was the fitting of the sub deck in four parts, and the other concern is that the plans aren’t  full size but I’m sure I can cope with that one.

The other issues were pretty minor which I’m sure I can deal with as I proceed, if they are still there of course!

I’m sure Caldercraft will have rectified things over the last 19 years, but my one niggling doubt is the fitting of the sub decks.

If you didn’t consider this a problem Neil I’m sure I will cope assuming the sub deck problem still exists.

                  Regards

                  Brian

Don’t be too sure that things have been rectified – sometimes they have, sometimes not. If you have read my original review then just treat it as a word of warning for things to look out for and make your own mind up as you go along. Experienced modellers draw on their experience, sometimes without thinking about it. If you don’t have that degree of experience you can sometimes run into problems.

Best of luck with the model anyway. it does look really impressive when finished.

                    Colin

Thanks Colin for those words of wisdom and I shall heed what you say.

I’m looking forward tremendously to building the Imara and I’ll keep you all posted with my progress.

I’ve had a fair amount of experience with model boat building ,the last two being a 1/12th and a 1/16th Severn from Speedline Models.

If you would care to look at the 1/12th boat under way it’s on the Speedline website under "Customers models"

                      Thanks again

                      Brian

brian, any person who has built a Speedline "kit" has my admiration. i built a trent, and it wasn’t easy. you’ll have no problems with an imara, in that case. cheers neil.

                            Hi Neil

I’ve taken the plunge (excuse the pun) and ordered an Imara and have sorted the motors and ESC’s out, so for the moment one question remains, what size props?

                            Many thanks

                            Brian

                                  Hi Folks,

I too am an Imara owner, purchased mine over a year ago but only just started (I only build one model at a time!)

The sub deck is now supplied in 2 sections – and is fitted to the usual cross beams with a longitude spine to give the camber.  Before fitting the deck glue some 6mm balsa to the beams and sand to the camber, this supports the deck much more firmly across the beam.

Be careful taking measurements from the book or the full size plans – my deck house moulding is 15mm shorter than the drawing ! – and cocked up the measurements given for the beams.

But the model has details coming out of your ears and shed loads of character – Enjoy

                                  Cheers – Kenny
