This photos was taken at the Fincantieri ship yard at La Spenzia  during the contruction of the new Italian carrier Cavour , a sort of scaled down version of the new CVF for the RN . But here sections of the hull are being joined togeher in a floating dock . It’s amazing  how well they  do  to join together .

Good photograph for the modeller, at least now if you are plannng a large scale model, you know where to split it for transportation.

Here’s a photo of the Royal Caribbean Line’s “Enchantment of the
Seas” being extended. It’s quite simple really, you just cut it in
half, pull the 2 bits apart, then slide another section in….nothing
                to it

Hi Peter It is amazing . Not just the aspect of joining hulls but connecting up the services, power, water and all the other cabling that has to fit.  There would be hell to play if  they didn’t match !!

I believe that a lot of ships these days are designed with the possibility of future lenthening. They have the equivalent of a “tear here” place on the hull.

There was also a cruise ship company who commissioned an new centre section for one of their vessels. The shipyard constructed it but something went wrong with the deal and they ended up with a slice of ship on their hands which they obviously couldn’t do anything with! I’m not sure what happened in the end.

If memory serves, the RAF’s fleet of C130 Hercules were lengthened using the same principle.

Here is a photo I took of “Enchantment of the Seas” at Fort Lauderdale, last year. She had been lengthened at this time.

Its amazing how the engineers can “cut and shut” a ship in such a way that it can withstand the power of the sea without breaking its back….their welding ability is a lot better than mine.

I find it hard to accept these modifications too, Paul!……..There must be tremendous strain on the joints in rough seas!…………….Look what happened to the Titanic, as it tipped up…….broke in haif!

These days…………….you won`t find me in a ship…or an aeroplane!……………..Seen to many mishaps on YouTube!

Good job its not me doing the work as I would loose the bit that was supposed to be added in……………….I would be stood on the dock side patting my pockets and saying “I’m sure that I had it a moment ago”. now that would be a senior moment to be proud of.
