HMS Victory May 2011

I visited Portsmouth today and found that HMS Victory has had part of the outer planking to her port bow removed for repairs. Quite an interesting sight. The figurehead has also been removed for a while.

Colin, the amount of work beggars belief. It is truly amazing that the skill existed to make something that big out of that much wood

Is there any battle damage to be seen?

 

I once saw a book in the local library, many years ago and it showed the battle damage to the Victory

 

It was very interesting and the drawings were done by J M W Turner

 

No cameras in those days!

It’s probably all been repbuilt since then Bob, I think very little or the original now remains, notably the deck planking in the Orlop where Nelson died..

 

Still, you could probably say the same for most of us by now…

Just seen this (don’t get in here very much…).

 

You wouldn’t see any battle damage, because the bow on it now isn’t what was on it at Trafalgar (although it looks like it).

 

She was rebuilt in 1814, with the latest style round bow, which she kept until being rebuilt again in 1922 when she was put into dry dock. and it was decided to rebuild her her to her Trafalgar condition (she was apparently extremely rotten at this point – getting clobbered by HMS Neptune being towed to the breakers and making a break for freedom in 1908 couldn’t have helped…)
