help me please

can anyone help, i am a beginner and have a nitro engine to install into my boat. what i need to know is what parts i need to make it run. i know i need an air filter, fuel tank and starter but, is there anything else. please help anyone.

Hi Scott

It would help to know which engine it is and what parts / accesories you already have and what type of boat the engine is going in.

I should also warn you that nitro engines are not for the faint hearted nor are they a beginners engine, not only from the set up and running point of view but also because of the speed and lack of manouverability that are inherent in such engined models.  

Sorry to put a downer onto a newcommer but I would hate for you to smash you model up on its first outing,

I would strongly advise that you join a club where experienced members will give you all the help and advice that you need

Hi Scott,

As Paul says, its best to join a Club, then you hopfully would be insured as well.

A lot of local Authorities have banned the use of IC boats because of the noise and speed upsetting the wildlife,and quite right to.

You do not say what area you are in as there may be a club nearby.

hi guys, the engine is a hb 20 nitro marine engine, and the boat{not sure what it is but it was made in the sixties, looks like a cabin cruiser type} is about 4ft long. i kno i ave probably made the wrong choice but i dont want to go down the electric route. as for other parts all i have so far is a silencer. is there an engine which would be more suitable? ie diesel perhaps. you will be able to see some pictures of the restoration once they have been approved. thanks for the advice.

In a 4ft boat an electric motor would work quite well. obviously you have a need to use i.c. why is this?

i have had an electric one before, but i didnt build it myself. its probably just that need to try something different.

Hi Scott

Have a look at Graupner’s 700 series these are nice big and powerful motors. check out the specifications then look for the same ratings in other manufacturers products,

I use Johnson motors which are equivalent to a 700 and readily available (look on e bay) the only down side to Johnsons is the larger power drain on the battery. I have a 4ft Huntsman with a Johnson motor and it draws 2.5 amps on full load.

cheers, ill have a look. are there any websites which might be of interest to me for parts and accessories, as all i have is a bare shell, dont even have a prop shaft{took the old one out as it was bent}. thans again.

I don’t want to bang on about how good it is but you should treat yourself to a copy of Model Boat mag, it has lots of contacts for model suppliers who will all give you great service and advice.

hi i have been looking for motors ad have seen a johnson 600 size 6-12 volt length 65mm depth 36mm shaft diameter 3.2mm off load current 1.57 amp max load 69amp rpm19800. would yhis be of any use?

That engine sounds fine if a little heavy on the amps, beware of paying to much for a johnson as good secondhand ones can be picked up for a couple of quid.

I am supprised that Paul has not answered this question as the johnson motors are his choice of power units.

Hi sam, i managed to pick it up for 3.50 brand spanking on ebay. I am having trouble finding a 14-15inch prop shaft any ideas?, cause i cant go any further with the restoration without it,  I have tried ebay for one but the max is 11inch that i have seen. Also what prop would be best suited?

Hi Sam

I am glad that you have bought the johnson motor, the propshaft sounds long is this to suit the original position of the i.c. engine? If so you might think about repositioning the motor especially in relation to the placing of the batteries.

If not try the prop shop for the longer shaft. Also try them for a 3 bladed prop to suit the boat and shaft.
