I have just purchased a new boiler and engine (both brand new from Stuart models – Puffin) for my Krick Victoria boat and am having problems getting the burner to function properly. the burner ignites, but the flame doesn’t travel down the funnel to the burner, all that happens is i get a large flame burning at the top of the funnel! Am wondering if its due to the the state of the gas when it gets to the burner (ie as a liquid rather than a gas?!)
If anyone can give some some advice that would be great.
      Cheers
      Pete

It sounds like you have the gas valve open too far. Are you using a refillable tank or a disposable one?  Does the burner work outside of the boiler?
          Regards,
          Gerald.

Hi Pete     Are you lighting the burner at the top of the funnel??    You really should light the burner at the bottom of the boiler, then the flame will draw more air in, as it is the gas air is being drawn up the funnel and burning at the top. The amount of air being drawn into the burner is important for good combustion, not enough and the gas will not burn untill it gets out of the funnel and mixes with more air.

            cheers Tom

PS don’t know if this will help

Thanks guys. I have been in contact with Stuart models and they are sending me a new boiler (they have been excellent with advice and with their service) that has been tested and works correctly. I don’t know whether the fault was with me or the boiler but i have used other model marine steam units in the past without any problems, though this is the first Stuart one.

Gerald – I am using a refillable gas tank (supplied by Stuart models) and the burner is inside the boiler, although it can be removed.
Tom – I have tried lighting it from the top and also by removing the burner, lighting it and putting it back in (the instructions supplied with kit recommend lighting it from the burner first, to set the correct air/gas combination and then light from the top of the boiler – so they differ from the ones in the instructions provided in your link).

I will wait for the new one to turn up and will let you know how i get on….
              Cheers guys
              Pete
