Having just logged on on the “big” computer in the loft rather that the tichy notebook I normally use, i have noticed a few other articles. Not sure how I have missed them before, however i would like to post on this one as I think Harry has the right approach. i realise this may not sit well with others, but its my personal opinion. looks up Harry`s pastings
Harry. I have just seen your article in model boats online, and I like your thinking here. You are of course dead right, the young lads (and possibly lasses) like to zoom along and such RtR types are now available, fast and relatively cheap. The observation that speed draws the public is I am afraid to say, on the money. You can parade with as good a model as its possible to make, but if you are pottering around…yawn yawn. Open the taps and “ooh little Johnny look at that nice model boat”.
As with a lot of other activities, interest is multiplied by the number of people involved. Now and again I see RtR speeders on the pond…once perhaps..and do they ever come back…probably not. Its boring, zooming around on your own…but if there were several there and a bit of ad hoc racing was organized, its a different story.
I have always subscribed to the “over scale speed and be damned” school of model boats, be it a destroyer or a tug. Slow is boring (I dont ALWAYS go fast, and that is what an ESC is for) and especially for the youngsters. My lad likes his boats (the ones I have made for him) and they all have a fair turn of speed. The hobby will only continue with fresh blood and if it needs to entice them in with speed or whatever then so be it.
Food for thought I recon.
