        Hi,

I'm considering building a static model of Victory as a retirement project. Having searched online for the kit, I discovered that there are various manufacturers that supply different options.

Does anybody have any knowledge/experience or opinions as to which are the best/worst quality in terms of material/plans etc.

        Many thanks

          Hi Adrian,

Before giving any advice can you give us some idea of how much previous experience you have with building this type of model? A good Victory kit is a very large and complex project and many people find they have bitten off more than they can chew which can be very disheartening. As a previous Editor of Model Boats once remarked to me, 'many Victories are started – few are finished!'

Unless you are confident in your abilities, it can be better to start off with one of the less complex (but still attractive) kits. This will enable you to familiarise yourself with the techniques and avoid mistakes when you come to tackle the more complex model.

          Colin

            Hello Adrian

I started a Galleon kit in Sept 2012, called Sovereign of the Seas

It is similar to the Victory and if you can read my thread, you will get a good idea of what is involved

It was good fun for the first four months or so, but the planking was too laborious and even though I tried very hard to do a good job, the Bamboo planks were not fit for purpose in my opinion and I ended up scrapping the lot!

Read my thread and ask a few questions, before diving in!

            Bob

                Colin,

                Thank you for your reply.

I have been building model boats on and off for the last 35 years and have build many from kit and a couple of scratch build efforts. I'm very fussy about detail and accuracy and am ones of those people who prefers to get it right no matter how long it takes. Whilst I wouldn't attempt to scratch build a Victory, I would very much enjoy the complexities of a kit.

                Bob,

Thank you also for your reply. I shall certainly have a look at the thread.

Sorry I didn't get back to you immediately but I don't log on that often. This was my first attempt to use the forum as I have only been a member of it for a very short time.

                Regards,

                Adrian

If you read my build thread, you will find a link to the model supplier and further link to the HMS Victory kit and the official build of the model from start to finish

                    Adrian,

In the Model Boats Kit Special, November 2006 is a review of the HMS Victory kit by Jotika.

Keith Julier's 22 page review is well worth reading for anyone thinking of building a good model of this ship. The model is 1385mm long x 940mm high x 525 across the main yard, and Keith (who builds these models to a superb standard) states a build time of between 2400 and 3000 hours.

                    Tony.

Yes, the Jotika Victory is a first class project for those willing to get to grips with it.

It is really worthwhile seeking out the reference material mentioned.

Let us know how you get on.

                        Colin
