Paul, the hull is sprayed with Dulux spray cans, and the planking is stained with Wattyl Stain and Varnish (all in one) Teak.

Thanks, Barry, I was pleased with the way she looked on the water. Looking at photos of the real thing, they push up quite a bow wave at speed, and the model certainly does that.

                Hi Corrado,

Thank you for your kind comments. I do indeed remember, and your photos were invaluable to me. I referred to them many times during the construction of my model, in fact I sent you an email but never received a reply. Perhaps your email address has changed. I also sent you a message on the Model Boat Mayhem Forum.

Yes, my PM is working, but I have been away for a few days, and only arrived home a couple of hours ago. I will send you the photos via email.

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort so soon after arriving back home as you must have lots more pressing things to do.

Hi Peter may I say what a tremendous model you’ve built there looks the business in the sailing photo’s just hope my copy of Pauls barrelback looks half as convincing when the props arrive next week and she gets her sea trials. Even though I live in one of the most beautifull parts of the Uk I must admit to a slight sense of jealousy while viewing some of the photo’s of the area you live in then I read the rainfall figures ah well perhaps not eh.

Thanks for your comments on my Grand banks, Phil. She is to have her first club outing today, and I will take some photos, in sunshine this time.

We are now enjoying our typical glorious, sunny winter weather after all the rain. The rain “event”, as the weather people call it, is most unusual here at this time of the year, and was very unwelcome. Thankfully, the weather system has long gone, and we are back to our normal weather for this time of the year – cool mornings, around 4 to 9 Celsius, up to around 17 to 20 during the day and, as I said, brilliant sunshine. Marvellous.

                          Peter.

A few shots taken in our normal sunny winter weather. Perfect day, cool, with little or no wind, and quite a few onlookers. One photo was a fluke, I took some shots of the various boats on the lake, and happened to catch a near miss. Our Club secretary’s twin 13 year old grand daughters were having a great time with his boat, and one of the club boats, when they almost had a coming together. Fortunately, youthful reflexes saved the day.

Another photo shows the beautiful clear sky, and a few of the spectators. The last shows my Lady Catherine alongside fellow member, Martin Whitehead’s steam drifter, while their skippers had a refreshment break.

                            Peter.

Great fun Peter. Is that a still lake or moving water you are sailing on?

It’s a salt water tidal lake, Barry, but the water enters through 60 cm diameter concrete pipes at each end, so it’s virtually still water.

It looks a lovely spot Peter. We are having a southerly blast and it is freezing. Sleet is comming down with the rain.
How do your boats stand up to the salt water? Especially the electrics. What precautions do you take to protect things?
I haven’t sailed any of my boats in salt water yet, but if I did it would open up more opportunities to sail as we travel around NZ.

David, we simply take the normal precautions to prevent water ingress, and wash down well with fresh water after each sailing session. I have never had a problem sailing in salt water in the 5 years I have been doing so.

Our local council built a wash down table for us, and laid water on as well, so we can’t complain about them not helping us.

As a matter of interest I, and about 6 other club members, spent from 8 am until nearly 3 pm today running a barbeque at our sailing lake, in co-operation with the Ballina Shire Council. The council held a tree planting day at the lake, as part of a park beautification program, and invited high school groups, and any one else who was interested, to plant a tree, and a barbeque meal was provided free. They asked our club to run the barbeque, and said they will reimburse us for all costs, and give us a good donation as well.
We cooked over 150 sausages, over 500 trees were planted, and a good day was had by all.

Sounds like a great day was had by all. It is good when everyone gets involved in a community project like that, then more people take pride in the area.

The Lady Catherine can just be seen lurking behind my Nordkap, the other boats belong to 2 other members.

                                                  Hi Peter (Fitness),

Already for quite a very long time I have the intentions to build a (scale 1:25) model of a GRAND BANKS 32 ft. / more preferable even a 42 ft. The biggest problem is, that I cannot find PLANS etc. etc., and of course I mean the LINES-PLANS and the GENERAL ARRANGEMENT-PLANS.

Are You able / willing to help me on these plans / drawings.

                                                  Thanks in advance.

                                                  Best Regards.

                                                    Hi Johan,

It's quite a while since I built my Grand Banks and no longer have the plans. However, they are still available to purchase from Traplet Publications at this address

                                                    **LINK**

It is a very nice boat, and one which I sail regularly. If you do build one I would be very interested to see photos of your progress.

                                                    Regards,

                                                      Hi Peter,

Thank You very much for the tip (on where to find / to buy the drawings). Excellent !!

I'll order them as soon as possible.

The building of the model itself has to wait 'for some time' because I am still in the middle of another project.

It is (1:25) scale model of the (Dutch) pushertug SCALDIS. In my 'freetime' I am driving also on the real one, which is owned by a very good friend of mine. For this particular project I've setup a designated Facebook-page, which you can find under: https://www.facebook.com/ProjectScaldis

If you're interested in other projects that I have built in the past, you can take a look in my (public) albums, which can be found on my private-Facebook-page: https://www.facebook.com/johan.van.heiningen

One of my major projects was the build of a – BIG SCALE (1:25) – seagoing tug, HAPPY HUNTER (since 2002 renamed and repainted by me to MAERSK HUNTER). It's a huge model of 2,10 meters length, 0,5 meters width, and a total weight of 120 kilograms. Building-time approx 10 years.

                                                      Best regards.

Johan van Heiningen – The Netherlands.
