What do people use to glue the tube into a boat?

What prep is given to the tube ?

A light roughing with a bit of emery paper, then glue in with a standard car body filler, then coat with resin (car body filler is porous, hence the resin coat).

I am not sure that I have done anything other than stick it in the `ole and slap epoxy on it??? Ashley

NB…ok, I usually spot-glue it in place with superglue and check it is lined up, and motor the motor with a 1.5V battery BEFORE slapping epoxy all over the place

I line the tube up and dab it with a few spots of epoxy, usually the 5 minute stuff and let it set. If it is aligned correctly I coat it fully in layers to finally bond the shaft in.

Kip: do you mean polyester resin as this is also porous, hence why they use a gel coat on finished products such as marine hulls as the gel coat gives the resin its water tightness.

I am assuming you mean epoxy resin as this is water tight and is the only resin to use.

Like Kip I often use polyester resin for final fixing of the prop tube. Whilst it does have a low level of porosity, we usually paint our models so no problems arise.

Hi All

This is quite a good way of making sure you have clearance from the bottom of the hull with a 35mm ply disk for a 30mm prop, especially useful on twins also the same angle when measured up at the motor end, rough up the tube & Poundland 5 min epoxy does the job.

Very good ray. Nothing wrong with Poundland epoxy! or Wilkinson's for that matter.

As it happens, I have just re-shafted two landers using `the usual` method….spot superglue and epoxy.

Would like to make a comment about cheap epoxy adhesives. I purchased some from one of the cheap high street shops to hold some lead ballast in place and at the same time fill a void inside a hull. During the curing process it created a great deal of heat and smoked for a while, luckily the hull was wood and not styrene. If I use any again I will have a trial mix using a piece of scrap.

Yes the chemical reactions will generate heat, I never had any issues with epoxy resin, but polyester resin has caught me out in the past with a large mass of resin & catalyst layed up to thick has a scary effect !! I feel I was conned buying expensive epoxy for years

I probababy used too much hardener !
