      Hi Fred

Thanks for the info on gauges. I will contact them. As for clubs, I live in mid Wales and we don’t have any. I suppose Hereford ME club is my nearest.

Yes my regulator is by Malcolm Beak who I have discovered has a download section on ‘paddleducks.co.uk’ where he has placed info on his regulator and also automatic water pump systems, but there is a catch – paddleducks does not allow ‘newbies’ to download. You have to contribute first! and it is just finding time for all these forums. I have had a reply from something on modelboatsmayhem, so I am off to look at that next.

I use an early version of Autosketch for all my drawings. It will read dxf files, so yes if you could e-mail me a dxf file I would be interested in having a look.

      ps. my e-mail is eddiepriceATdirectsave.net

        Hi Eddie,

I have sent you copies of my drawing in dxf format and they seemed to be getting to you. You addressed yourself as addiepriceATdirectsave.net but I preumed you intended to use ‘@’ rather than AT.

If you have not received them let me know and perhaps ordinary mail will be more apprpriate. Ther could be some incompatibility inthe drawing exchange format.

By the way, in an earlier note you said ‘gas tests of 150 PSI’. It is a bit more than that you will need to test at 320 – 330 PSI according to the MPBA rules

        All the best, Fred Graham

          Hi Fred

I have received the dxf files, Thanks. I may have a problem. My first attempt at reading the file came up with an error, but let me try again. I will get back to via e-mail if I have problems. Yes the AT instead of @ is to stop Spammers collected e-mail addresses with software that searches web sites such as Forums  looking for the @ symbol, which is usually associated with e-mail addresses. The trials and tribulations of the computer age!

With regards pressure, I think I may have intended to say it was for the boiler testing.

Well I have just managed to heat my boiler with the gas burner. It is still just a lashup, but I wanted to get an idea of how long it would take to get steam – 15 mins seem a long time. The chaps from Monahan Steam on Modelboatsmayhem were quoting just over 6 mins from cold to 70 psi. I had 250 ml of water in my boiler, and I have still to insulate it. But playing around with the gas pressure does produce a wide variation in flame, so perhaps I need more gas pressure.

I am still waiting for a pressure gauge. I place an order over a week ago. It is a big company who regularly advertise in Model Boats, but they are so slow to deliver.

Has anyone any experience of regulating gas valves based on the boiler pressure?

All for now, there is a program on tv I want to see.

              G’day Fred,

I see you have the complete set of Peter Arnott’s plans for his V4 engine.

I have all the magazines in the series bar one, the October 1993 issue.

would it be presumptuous of me to ask if you would send me the V4 article by P. Arnott in the October 1993 issue.

Like Eddie I’m having gas burner problems too. I even had a go at a downsized version of my kero. blowlamp. Managed to spray burning kero. all over my shed without burning it to the ground. but not much success as a heat source for a boiler, so shelved that idea for the timebeing.

I live in Australia, which is probably a bit out of your local patch!

                Hi Eric,

I have no problem with that but it will be difficult to send them without your address.  I would send it by ordinary mail if that suits you as I have found scanning and attaching to email can prove a little dodgy. I will try email if you let me know  your email via this site.

                All the best, Fred Graham

                  G’day Fred,

Thanks for your very prompt reply, I know how you feel about emailing & scanning & attachments. I usually get one of my sons to show me how it’s done, and then make them upset a few weeks later when I tell them I’ve forgotten, can you show me again!!

Have a go at emailing me at  [email protected] and if we hit a problem,I’ll have my son show me how it’s done and pass his words of wisdom to you.

Thank you again,  Fred for your trouble

                  regards

                  Eric Moffat

I have just seen the latest issue of Model Boats – September – and note that Peter Arnot has an article on his vapourising burners. It is presented as an update on his earlier article.

                      Hi Eddie,

Yes thanks, I have a copy and it makes good reading. You will notice that one of the the pictures on this lot of posts in the forum has my boiler with a vaporising coil in the centre flue entry, just as Peter says in his articles. I can vouch for his idea and it works very well, although Peter needs no endorsement from me.

You may have noticed that in his opening sentence in the ‘Background’,  he mentions that I had asked the editor to request both Martin Ranson and Peter Arnott to update their earlier articleson boiler firing. They have now both done so and they are a most welcome addition to the fund of information on LPG which I think steam fans will find very helpful.

Since the articles were published I have made contact with Martin Ranson both at Harrogate Exhibition and by phone and letter. I have not had any contact with Peter Arnott but he seems like a man to get to know.

                      Thanks for the ‘flag up’

                      All the best, Fred Graham

I have looked at Fred Graham's photo of his centre flue boiler with considerable envy.

I built a similar boiler (nowhere near the workmanship shown in the photo) mine has a capacity of 500ml and flue diam of 22mm. I have been firing it with an adapted gas blow torch (Scharnberger make) as this is the only adequate source of heat I could find. The torch must be 12mm outside the mouth of the flue. I now wish to put this boiler in a model of Mr. Harley's "Miranda" yet to be built. I wish to present the steam powered model to my grandson, but as he is not yet old enough to appreciate the danger of an open flame gas torch, I have made a number of attempts to make a burner along a similar style to Fred's but, like Eddie Price I cannot generate anywhere near the BTU's generated by the blowtorch.

Can Fred or anyone else advise me how I can make a CLOSED heat source to fire a boiler of this size. I have made about 8 or ten attempts with 2 closed type but without success, and must now admit an inadequate amount of knowledge/expertise to complete this project without the assistance of the members of this forum

I have had little trouble with Martins designed burners. In fact they saved me from giving up. The only problem now is number 3 jets are no longer avalable. So 22mm fire tubes are not big enough.
