Hi, It didn’t take as long as I expected to make, of course I was rather caught up in seeing if my idea worked and it is very light.

I used a number of reference sources, one inexpensive one was the paper back book " Battleship Tirpitz", one  of the Conway maritime modelers series by Gerhard Koop and Klaus Peter Schmolke proved invaluable. There is quite a lot of stuff on Bismarck in the book as well as some excellent plans and great photographs. Robert Ballard’s Discovery of the Bismarck book was very useful too. Some of the pictures show areas of the ship that were difficult to understand in the main plan. It was the hanger areas and boat decks that I found quite difficult to find understandable pictures of.

By the way I think your progress so far looks really good, there is already that sense of massiveness coming, Bismarck is graceful and elegant but there is an underlying weight to her features. I love your open doors, I should have thought of doing that, but these are the wonderful differences between models that make them individually so interesting.

Mark i have both those books conway tirpitz too much detail on diesel engine??? a poor book i thought minimal detail and the plans were too fine,i thought the most usefull part was the model photo,s i would advise you dont use too much tirpitz detail there are a lot of differences between the two.but i did enjoy ballards book. Gary i used 1mm aluminium and shaped it in the vice with a hammer, and fixed in position with epoxy resin seems to work check pic fitted bridge wings.

Hi Pete, it was the model pictures that I too found useful, I do agree with you over the differences between the two ships especially in the funnel, boat deck and crane areas. There are other books I have used as well, I had one from the library for about a year off and on (I think the library staff must have thought me a bit odd or perhaps a touch O.C.D!!), I think it was the anatomy of the ship but I can’t remember for sure.

I think your aluminium method probably took a lot less time than my use of layers of thin ply and a lot of sanding and shaping. Looks good too!

its not a race to finish the build but i only use materials im used to working with wood/metal/filler etc cutting out the bridge wings/supports and fitting was tonights playtime about 2 hours all in inc paint and fitting more doors its not a 24/7 job .it must be said so much can be made thanks to aldi,s bandsaw in such a short time the bridge wing supports are 5mm aluminium plate cut with bandsaw 5mins inc drawing light file and hey presto ready to fit ,not as time consuming as you might think making things.im not too worried about the weight so im not limited to the type of materials i have at my disposal to construct my ship.it is nice to see other builds and get a different perspective so keep em coming

                                      hi pete

just collecting the internals so far it would be inpossible to do any building in this 1 room that i’am in since the wife & i split up.

but the intention is still to make the most accurate bismarck model that is possible and still be fulley rc

                                                    Hi Pete

Progress looks good, I like the black and white stuff, very atmospheric!

I’ve had a bit of a hold up in production, impacted wisdom tooth removed and my workshop’s a bit cold for comfort…. Still Dad and I are going to look at some new possible lakes on Tuesday so I’m starting to get back into the swing.

From here on I have to finish the rigging, fit the jackstaffs and bow fairleads. Then its ballast and sail!!!!

I saw a fleetscale Prinz Eugen for sale some time ago on Ebay for £350, nicely made too, wish I’d gone for her now, thay would have looked pretty good on the water together.

Still haven’t found any decent crew figures, any one got some ideas  where I could get some from?
