                                      Hi

I was just wondering if you were going to give her the striped camouflage or go with the grey. When I started building my Fleetscale Bismarck it was going to be the full camo until I saw how beautiful that hull looked in the grey. Now she’s getting close to completion I’m glad I decided against the camo, she’s such a majestic shape it seems a shame to disguise it.

Hi, unfortunately the image size looks to be problematicwith the site(they can only be so big) my pictures were taken on a webcam to show what I was on about. I’ll have to take some with my digital camera and size them down with photo shop.

I don’t know about my build being better, I thought some of my bits looked a little crude next to yours. What I can say is that the build was intended to produce a working model that would stand up to use on the water without parts being damaged every time she sailed. I also think that sometimes over detailing can spoil a model, there seems to be this idea that if it was on the original it must go on the model. I have seen so many models with oversized parts that at a given scale should not even be visible. My rule of thumb is look at pictures of the original and model what you can see.

One thing I need to do is find a source for some crew figures to add a some real life to my Bismarck along with purchasing her jackstafs.

im not sure about some of your parts looking crude next to mine, however i do not intend to overcomplicate my own build because its more for use than admiration and like yourself i too think too much detail can spoil.but joseph kaisers model is phenominal .what do you think to hand rails im leaving mine off the main deck i personally think they look more real without,if you look at the picture of the ship from the side in full you cannot see handrails they are too small.if you were to make handrails to scale you wouldnt see those either so why bother?im sure the purist rivet counters would not agree but hey thats life.ps why not post pics here it is a fleetscale link im just using it

                                                Hi Pete

I just stuck a few more webcam pictures on my profile.

I love these pictures, its the stuff that inspired me to build Bismarck in the first place. It’s interesting to see Bismarck and Rodney side by side on the water both tremendously different looks yet both so powerfull.

I agree with you about handrails, when you think about scale crew the size of any handrails are huge, the balls on the stantions would be the size of a mans head! The other thing is the fact that I have seen so many models of smaller than 96th scale at shows with damaged handrails. A small bump getting out of the car or on the water and you have an unsightly mess.

Now this is really interesting, I’m always fascinated by how two modelers will approach the same task. My superstructure was a bit of an experiment, I wanted to see if I could build an extremely light structure so that I could drastically reduce top-weight in future models ( particularly models with a high free-board, shallow draught, narrow beam and large superstructure). Of course Bismarck doesn’t need this but I thought that the model was a big enough “playground” to try my ideas and reduced top-weight certainly could do no harm, after all the resin guns and boats etc are quite a weight.

So far the experiment has proved pretty successful, I used mostly that plywood that has about the same thickness as paper on a framework made from 3mm square pine. Any areas that had rounded edge( like the front of the section you just made had balsa inserts so that I could sand the edge to the correct profile.

I’m hoping to build a model of a destroyer my grandfather served on and the technique should help produce a model that doesn’t roll onto it’s beam ends every time there’s a puff of wind. ( I have the hull but there are about four or five projects lined up before I start that one!
