Lucky you, I have been laid up for over a month with two swollen feet including a week in bed! Only managed to start getting out of the house by driving last week but still can't walk far. Doc thinks it is an arthritis flare up but I need more tests!

When ever I am unable to make any progress with r/c models, illness, unable to get out or any other reason I find it helps to turn build a small plastic kit, can be built on a modelling board, doesn't break the bank and certainly 'lifts the spirit'. They are also a good a break during a long r/c build, which could be months or years. They are a real pleasure and won't break the bank. Just don't forget the magnifying glass and tweezers for those tiny pieces.

This is my last build, a Revell Harbour Tug, built as the 1950's release 'Long Beach'. Now in progress (as well as many r/c boats) is an Airfix VW Beetle, brings back memories, one was my first car.

Andy and Colin. My comiserations. A plastic kit sounds like a workable solution to the modelling issue. Even better is you can motorise it. Colin, were you not doing a QM2 or something ??

Re underwater propulsioon. I can confirm that brushless indeed do work and work well under water. Trevor has demonstrated this. Some very small brushless are available…the only issue would be getting props, likely push-on, to fit.

Tony, very nice little boat (I dare say it is little). Artful background!

                Deepest commiserations, you chaps

If you had one of Paul's magic scooter / Loading devices …………You could have gone sailing?

                Ashley

You can make a little simple prop, using a strip of brass, twisted at each end…..With a nut each side

Or you could copy my GE version

What's that, you say?…………Sorry, old chap, hardboard is not really suitable

..of course, EeZebilts are specifically designed to be built in a bedroom, and they're a bit closer to real modelling. See the EeZeBilt props for a simple way to make (cheap) propellers down to less than 1/2":

Dodgy, I like that thinking!!! (EeZebuilt, in the bedroom or wherever) and plenty of scope to accessorise a small boat like this, after all, could be the size of a plastic kit.

Re props. esp Bob.. the issue is not makibg or sourcing small props but fitting them direct on a motor shaft. They need to be a press fit. probably some RtR spares might suit, and then making a QM2 with small brushless running underwater would be the solution to making thruster pods that small.

I made a push fit prop donkeys years ago. Find a scrap of neoprene tubing to fit the motor or shaft. Get a scrap of brass tubing that fits over the neoprene. Remove, file to size and solder some blades to the tubing. Clean, insert the neoprene, and push onto the motor shaft. 30 mins work, easy.

I'm running a medium brushless inrunner under water and have had a prop adaptor made that locks with a grubscrew to the shaft and has a 4mm thread on the end for the prop.

I've had no problems with this bit of the build

That issue is sorted with an EeZeBilt prop by making the prop integral to the prop-shaft. In very small sizes making the prop removable adds complexity and bulk…

                            Dodgy,

Must say I also like the idea of one of these Ezebilt designs as against a plastic kit. No problems with the glue smell when using balsa, furthermore, with modern acrylics paints these would make for a lovely table top build without causing any household upset!

                            Ashley,

Thank you for the comments about the background displays. My daughter painted them whilst studying art some years ago. Sometimes this is where other household members who have a flair for art can help out, I think Bob Wilson's wife paints the seas for his superb miniatures.

Tony. A good background can make a difference to a display. There was one quayside boat display at the MEX but the background was either simply a bit of white painted ply or something and even then it wasnt high enough to encompass the diorama (which was very good). The diorama could have been excellent with a bit more care in the background department. Indeed looking at my own stand I wish I had strung a line up between the splotlight posts and raised the rear of the shimmery table covering up a bit at the back

                                Ashley,

One display background which really caught my eye, how Larry Whetton displayed his "Guardsman" model. Easy to set-up yet very effective.

Must agree, it is well worth the little extra time and effort to enhance either a display (or photograph), by the use of the background. With your display – haven't we all wished we had done something different!
