I am a member of a local community group “The Featherstone and District Community Events Association” that provide free activities for our town. Playday is a national event that we joined 2 years ago. The venue of our event is Purston Park. Amongst the many activities to involve youth we have tried to develop last year for the first time in over 20 years the parks lake was used for model boats. Purston Park has a wonderful boating lake at only 3 ft deep with concrete bank. For many years model boats had been sailed there. Sadly the club died off. One great local guy was thrown in at the deep end (sorry for the pun) with his collection to simply show his models off. What happened was that the guy simply melted into a huge crowd where children and adults listened to his instructions. Some children were given a chance to steer the craft. A huge success is an understatement. Over the last year there has been a small number of people sailing craft on the lake. A spark has been re-ignited.
This year we are trying to publicise the event and especially the lake to model boat enthusiasts. So the call to all of you out there is this, on Wednesday 4th August 2010 at Purston park is a model boat day out from 10am to 3pm. You are all invited. Any club or single person is very welcome to come along and set up by the waters edge. The lakes surrounding are peacefull and sheltered by trees. The lake is clean of rubbish and does have a boat ramp. There will be a model steam engine running down one side of the lake. There will be 2 car parks near by and the ability to unload and then park up. The event will have many food and drink stalls and a minimum of 4000 visitors and a maximum of 8000.
