Another exciting story from the GE archives!……….
GE arrived at New York at midnight, in 1862, August 17th, with 1500 passengers aboard and a heavy freight load with an increased draught of 30 ft
To avoid a known sand bar, the Captain took a special course and steamed up the "Long Island Sound" which brought the ship perilously close to the"Northeast Rips" a treacherous rocky area. A slight rumble was felt on deck and the ship developed a slight list to port, but no leakage was found by the crew
On reaching NewYork, an enormous rip was discovered on the port side…..83 feet long by 9 feet wide! The ship had remained watertight however, thanks to Brunel`s forward thinking of having a double skinned hull! The ship was repaired at a cost of £70,000……….Now I wonder how they managed that in New York?
Here is an Artist`s impression of the incident…..

The rocks are now known as the "Great Eastern rocks"
Recently, a giant anchor was found close by and is thought to be a GE anchor, a photo of this item is note available at the moment, but will keep searching the net.
