Having identified my new boat as a Veron Veronica, I have a rigging diagram so now ready to buy the appropriate thread.

I have all of the Bowises required but 1, just one S hook, and 3 of 4 futtock hooks.

I can make a bowsie and the missing futtock hooks, and 1 S hook would suffice for beating sheet.

is it advisable to have hooks on all of the other standing and running rigging as cost of hooks is negligible.

boat is 27” long and 32” tall, a small pond yacht Bermuda rig, bowsies have holes of 1mm. The scraps of cotton rigging I’m left with are 1mm thick.

what then should I be looking to buy for rigging, 1mm hemp?

          Hi Chris

It's something I'll be coming to on the Pilot Cutter, so I'll watch the replies with interest.

I think a lot of people use the sort of cord that come with a set of window blinds – quite strong but with small diameter.

Whether, or not, you can buy the cord separately I don't know…I should try the model boat suppliers or, someone like Nylet who make the sails.

          Good hunting,

          Dave

            Hello Chaps,

            Well you did ask !!

I look for the most cost effective way to do most things

Here are a few products for you to consider, I would not use any sort of basic cordage for the standing rigging to hold the mast up as it stretch's, unless you want to buy Dyneema £££ , my favourite way of holding up the mast is Stainless Steel fishing trace which comes plastic coated with tube crimps, the fishing shop is your best friend for hooks and swivels etc.

Crochet yarn, whipping twine (from a yacht chandler's) , and lines from cheap kites all have their uses, here are a selection below.

I used to use brass bottle screws for tensioning the stays, but I really don't think they are neccessary unless it's a racing boat, but are £5.00 each approx. Bowsies are of limited use in my view, but can be used for adjusting the length of the sheets

            Hope that helps

Ray. a man after my own heart. Not that I do much rigging, but my box looks suspiciously similar!!

Fishing tackle shops, first port of call for small fittings !
