I have a couple of plastic construction kits to build during the forthcoming winter. Although these are not boat related, I would appreciate it if someone could recommend a decent adhesive to use.

Any of the liquid poly glues will be fine.

Colin – Many thanks for your help. I did a search on liquid poly cement/glue/adhesive and from a number of forums Tamiya Extra Thin Cement seems to be the choice of many. I have used other Tamiya products for my model boats e.g. masking tape, paint and certainly have had no problems

I would think that would be a very good choice. As always with plastic glues, the important thing is not to get it on surfaces where it isn't intended to go! I normally use a very small brush but others will use the extremely fine tubing applicators to get the glue exactly where it is needed.

If you are making an aircraft kit or something with windows then it is also worth getting canopy glue for the transparent parts as it doesn't fog the plastic if you apply a bit too much in error.

                David,

The Tamiya Extra Thin Cement is an excellent choice for plastic modelling, with which I have excellent experience, but please note that it is primarily intended for capillary application, i.e. you first put the two pieces together without glue, and then carefully add a small amount of cement to the joint, either with the brush attached to the underside of the bottle cap or with a separate brush. Capillary power will then pull the cement into the joint were it will join the parts by melting them together.

If you need to apply the glue to the joint surface before putting the parts together, you will need a less liquid cement. I have not (yet) tried it, but have heard others say good things about the Revell Contacta cement … although I'm sure there are also other brands that work well.

Also, it is important to remember that the above cements will only succesfully glue opaque (styrene) plastic to the same kind of plastic. As Colin already said, using them on clear plastic is likely to create fogging, and should your model also have for example photo etch parts, these will need to be attached using CA glue.

                /Mattias

I personaly prefer the revel poly cement as it has a nice needle tube and you dont get it all lover the show , as i used to as a kid i think i had more glue on me than the model !!
