Rather heart warming communal clapping on our estate just now in appreciation of the work of our carers. We probably all know of someone on the fronltline. And any of us could need them.

I feel like a fish out of water here in Tameside?

What's all this talk about clapping?

          Have I missed something?

Yes we stood outside with half the street and clapped, heard lots of clapping and cheering from adjacent roads.

                    Dear All

                    This virus is getting worse.

After being cooped up for 14 days I decided to get some fresh air and went for a drive, I was stunned at how many cyclists and walkers were out but more over how friendly everybody was.

Its odd that how difficult situations brings out the best in the British.

That probably doesn't do any good if they are coming close and getting too friendly. Everyone has been told to stay in, unless it is vital to go out (food, medical supplies etc), so why can't they do that? We are finding fresh air in the garden – more than enough for our needs! We are also more than capable of staying in from a mental point of view, but if it is impossble to get any food, we can last maybe three weeks on starvation rations. This morning, I got two loaves, a bag of brussel sprouts and two litres of milk. The queue at Booths was about 300 feet long (six feet between each person in queue). Got the above items from a small supermarket, but not much available, and no social distancing at all, as far as I could see.

                      Bob

This morning I drove to the medical practice in the next village to collect some prescriptions. It's a round-trip of about 8 miles. In total I passed five cars, and the six people I saw on foot were all dog-walkers, but they all waved a greeting. The usually-busy local bypass was deserted.

We had delivery of a new greenhouse this morning. The driver said he'd been in Cornwall yesterday and there was "no sign of life at all beyond Bodmin" – apart from the scum who broke into his van while he was attending to nature and stole his wallet and even his change of clothes. He was driving for 17 hours as a consequence.

Some lovely little people stole three bikes from Nottingham Queens Medical Centre staff enclosure last night. They reckoned without CCTV – got 'em. It's not just the best in people that a crisis brings out.

These are dark days indeed. Stay safe, fellow boaties.

I visited our local Pharmacy this afternoon to pick up my repeat prescriptions. Just a couple of people waiting outside when I arrived. We were either called in one at a time or the assistant came out with what we needed. All very amicable.

While I was there a big newish Mercedes pulled up on the yellow lines and a middle aged poser guy in shorts (and scarf!) jumped out and just walked straight past us inside. He was then asked to wait outside and just stood there huffing and puffing with his scarf wrapped round his face and trying to pretend he was important. Unfortunately we do have people like that in the big houses in this area. There is a word for them!

The Coop opposite was almost deserted so I went over and got a few bits including a pack of loo rolls! (just the one!) There were a lot of empty shelves but a delivery lorry was just arriving. I then walked round the corner to the M&S food hall and again was able to walk straight in. It was very well stocked so I just got a couple of dinners and some croissants! When I left there were a few more people about but it wasn’t really busy.

Our local butcher was fully stocked but they are quite expensive.

Had an email from a friend this afternoon and they had to queue for almost an hour at th local Tesco during 'oldies hour'. She said the place was quite well stocked and everyone was given a bunch of flowers.

On a downside my Brother's prostate removal operation at Exeter has been cancelled at two day's notice. He's a very worried man.

We are rationing our tinned and jarred foods now. We didn't panic buy, but always have a few of each type in stock. Meat almost gone. I am very relieved that they did my eye surgery in early September, as it was quite urgent, and I had waited since February – It must be very worrying to have urgent surgery postponed through this virus. Nor something that I looked forward to, and quite unpleasant, but glad it is now behind me Colin – Hope they can sort your brither out sooner rather than later. I still have hopes that the English Channel will provide a barrier, as it has always done in the past. As the song said "A fortress built by nature for her purpose, against infection and the hand of wars!"

All our local shops are well stocked with no queues. It’s the big supermarkets that have the issues

Went out on me bike today, passed perhaps 6 small shops and a cooperative …could have walked straight in.

Passed the big Sainsburies in Walton…massive queue……

Sadly the English Channel won't protect us this time as the virus is already here and is very virulent, all that we can do now is stay indoors and avoid other people.

Its the same up here with the small shops having decent stocks and the supermarkets have no stock and huge queues

Sorry to be so dramatic, but just had a horrible thought!

My Son and Daughter are doing our shopping……All well and good?

BUT………Every item purchased including the shopping bags need to be wiped clean with eg…….Dettol?

That's the problem……..What do we use?

We are using Dettol for the time being with Bacterial Hand Wash

                                  Makes sense?

Yes anything coming into the house could have the virus especially objects with hard surfaces.

Dettol is thought to be ok to use but read this link from Dettol as it contains all of the information about how their products work against the virus.

We are using soap & water as instructed for hands. If it destroys the virus on your hands it should hopefully do the same for your shopping.

The other thing that we are doing is not touching the new shopping for as long as we can avoid doing so until we have used up what we already have. As we have only ever shopped once a week (25 mile round trip to any supermarket) we can leave some stuff untouched (other than soap & water as soon as we got home) for some time.

The other alternative is dilute bleach. Read the bottle for instructions.

Does Dettol kill virus? I know that it kills bacteria but virus?

We are staying in apart from going out for food, and when I do go out, I wear surgeon's rubber gloves. But try as I may, I just can't seem to summon up any great fear about it. "Only an idiot would claim not to be terrified by it all," (Just to save someone from telling me ) so I guess I must be an idiot, but can't helpt it!

Apart from the inability to obtain a good supply of food, it isn't really bothering us much. I don't think any country will recover from the economic disaster that is looming up, for a very long time. And life will be very much changed for the next few years. But I do rejoice in the vast reduction in air pollution from aircraft and petrol fumes.

But I still doubt whether the human race will learn anything from all this!

One advantage of being housebound is being able to see what the neighbours get up to.

For example one neighbour has been walking topless around the garden, all pink flesh and boobs.
