Don’t ever be tempted to sell a model boat on flea bay. Some bloke wanted to pay ?30 inc postage for a decent fireboat.
Yes I am fed up and upset.

              Cheer up Paul

You may have shown too many models at the same time?

Display them in singles and see what happens?

                Hi Bob
Good advice but I’m afraid that my worries go deeper than that

It is a sad fact that, unless your boat is of museum quality, no one is going to pay a price that reflects the cost of parts and labour that goes into these things. The finish alone on your barrel back is easily worth the money.

My collection is virtually worthless, and would only realise the cost of the hardware left in situ if I ever I were to sell them

                  Ashley.

E-Bay is an unfathomable entity, as are some of the folk who use it to buy stuff. For example, my 15 year-old garden shed (17' x 8&#39 was put in at £120 just to see what sort of interest there might be. It eventually went for £610 after a titanic tussle in the closing minutes. A roof-box which started at £20 went for £180! Compare that to a Graupner Parat kit with two VS drives and all the accessories which cost well over £500 and didn't even make £300.

You once referred to E-Bayers as tyre-kickers and I'm afraid that some are just that (and worse), but you can't really blame them for trying it on when something appears at auction. I'm sure your customary turn of phrase was more than adequate to discourage the geezer from pushing the issue!

Having had the time to consider the fallout after my foray into selling on fleabay I have to admit to being totally baffled by the response.

An enthusiasts piece like the 4ft wooden Huntsman only made £28 and yet the quickly built first prototype of the 5ft Swordsman sold for £50 (and more amazingly I could have sold many more Swordsmen for double the price) A classic 3ft Fireboat only got to £18 before I took it off sale and the bidder who won a decent Sea Rover for £18 has disappeared.

                          Totally Baffled

Ain't no money in model boats, Paul. Some tatty old "pond yacht" would go for a silly fortune, yet a beautifully handmade model of something won't fetch it's worth in wood alone.

                              Hi Martin

I put it down to 'live and learn' it seems that even an old hand like me can still fall down an obvious hole.

Hi Paul , I used to sell lot on ebay back in my live steam days and it really it a lottery with regards to the you getting around its true value for example i put a Princess of Wales loco on with value of £3000 and it only got bids up to £500 , i put it on again a month later and it sold for £3600 . Its all down to the right people with a real understanding of the item you are selling . It can get you down and you start thinking maybe its only worth the pitense they are bidding . This not true it will be Joe Blogs who as not got a clue about what you are selling , he will compare what you are selling to something for sale at Toys Are Us .I gave up with ebay and started using Live Steam Forums to sell items were at least you know the people looking have a knowledge about the items.
