You don't cut it at the end, silly. Someone's already done that. You cut it somewhere between the two ends.

      (Honestly! Some people!!!)

Only the stretchy ones. Now stop wasting time posting fripperies and persiflage on this forum and get building! I have an excuse – it's called waiting for 10 coats of varnish to dry………………

                Hello Dave

                Update report:

The frame is built and I am starting to fix the skin but owing to a disagreement with the diesel injector pump on my car I am unable to get out to the timber yards and root about for mahogany offcuts.

Can't help you there, Doc. I don't do hardwood offcuts and what I know about injector pumps could be written on the back of a postage stamp with a tar brush. Don't you have any someones who could either do the rooting around for you or fix the pump?

Alas I need to be the one that does the rooting, looking for that perfect offcut where the grain and colour are just right and as for the pump I need someone with the mechanical equivalent of a degree in computer programming…….very rare to find a good one and the thick end of a grand to sort out.

                      Hi Paul

Where do you go for your off cuts and what sort of prices do the charge. Thinking ahead.

                      Cheers

                        Hi Andy

The nearest place to me that is accessible to the public is Atlantic Timber in Altrincham, reasonable prices and very good timber.

Alternately you could ask at the trade counter of any large timber merchants if you could have a look in their offcut bins.

                            Dear Kevin

In my current amiable mood I have been thinking about my derisive comments concerning Ashley and hardboard.

Perhaps Ashley isn't daft at all and has actually hit upon a cheaper alternative to plywood so I have decided to take Ashley at his word and build the side sections of Charlies hull from 2mm MDF.

Admittedly these particular MDF boards are pre-treated to be waterproof but for a stuck in the rut builder like me this is a huge leap of faith.

                                      Hi Dave

From my local timber yard, to describe it as waterproof might be overselling it a bit as it is described as water-resistant.

Its the stuff that's commonly put under floor coverings and is available as thin as 1.2mm.

                                      Bob

The MDF hasn't been exonerated just yet but so far everything seems ok.

My New York river boat has a superstructure built from corrugated card and old cereal boxes.

                                        Hello Paul

Since Charlie is reasonabell size, namely……1200mm long……..Why not push the boat out and fit a Thomason Drive?

Two MFA850`s on a housing of your choice?……….That would be a very interesting talking point at Haydock!……Not to mention , your thread!

You could have a long baseplate, about 250mm long x 75mm wide x 25mm deep……..Plenty of rivets and a nice green colour!

A pair of timing pulley`s and one belt down to the propshaft…..And a simple coupling between the motor shafts, with a nice guard fitted

There are no special parts to be made, either

Two 720v batteries. two ESC`s and the secret Abell circuit!………..WOW….Am I impressed !

                                        Like the idea?

Here`s a quick sketch of the proposed drive

It could also be installed in your other designs……..Ellie, and Brutus and even the Mighty Thor!

                                          With 540 motors etc

I`m quite excited by this idea !

                                              Hello Engineer Bob

You have been very busy on my behalf and come up with a stonking idea but I'm sorry to say that I wont be able to use it as I am under grandsons strict orders on this build to go high speed and brushless.

Your idea would work very well in a boat like Thor or a large scale TID, in fact it would be worth building another 6ft TID just to use your design. In fact a twin pair set side by side driving a single shaft would make very powerful boat.

                                              Ashley

I was going to use hardboard but when I got to the merchants the MDF became a better candidate to prove your building style on the basis of if it will work with MDF it will work with anything.

I used Gorilla wood glue and fitted the first skin yesterday, the clamps have now come off and the MDF has followed the hull curve correctly without splitting or delaminating.

My grandsons are 8 and 1 my granddaughters are 22 months and 8 weeks old.

The boat is being built for the most recent granddaughter who is called Charlie however the construction is being supervised by Ryan who is 8.

There is no pulling the wool over Ryans eyes as he has been building with me since he was 2 and was solving basic model electrical problems at 3 so I cant cut any corners or fit inferior equipment. I only got the MDF past him by calling it an experiment in alternative materials.

                                                    Dear Kevin

The MDF parts of the hull are now all fitted and look great, nice tight joints and a blemish free lovely smooth surface…. just right for painting and no need for Bobs favourite P45 filler.

The next step is to remove the hull from its building board and crack on with the deck and superstructure.

                                                      Paul and Ryan combo

You could still mount the brushless motors on a Vee block like the Abell Drive and use timing belts for shallow propshaft angle

                                                      Sounds good to me
