          Hi Geoff

I know this is years ago but I'm grasping at straws, which motors did you go for in the end? Just starting this model now and would love to hear about the motor choice whether it went well or not?

          Kind regards

          Clive

You could contact Jotika who make the kit, they will probably be able to suggest something suitable.

Clive (We can't go on meeting like this………………)

There is a wiring diagram for this model on the ACTion website here **LINK**

I would suggest using a pair of Mabuchi 555 motors and running them on 12 volts. They are low speed but high torque and would suit a stately model like Schaarhorn very nicely, coupled to something like 45mm – 50mm 3 or 4 bladed props. All of the stuff shown, including the motors and battery, can be obtained from Component Shop.

                Hi Dave

Yes, found the ACTion diagram before, was wondering which motors they had used, 555's sound good thanks.

Colin, I have contacted Jotika and await the reply, had to ask them about another detail on the boat as the Caldercraft model supplies all 3 hole stanchions plus a handrail on top, but all my research shows 2 hole stanchions with a handrail – even a photo from 1908.

face 1Having done even more research I'm starting to realise all the changes made to the ship since built in 1908. The Caldercraft kit is certainly as built but it didn’t stay that way for many years. However all sorts of changes were made when it was bought to the UK in the early 70’s.

When finally returning to Hamburg in approximately 1989 she was restored almost to original spec. baring some modernisations and one or two other things.

So along the way she changed from 3 bladed props to 4 blades, the rudder went from the curved kit item to a more rectangular shape, the rear steps up to the top deck above the main saloon were moved from the centre line of the ship to nearer the port side and the paint scheme changed quite a lot. Tall the changes are too many to list here but the end result is I’m thinking of building her as she is now – mainly due to the incredible wealth of information available.

The other major issue is ballasting and balance – built from the kit she does not sail well and may even capsize. I will be re-manufacturing many parts above the main deck to reduce weight, including 3D printing some parts in hollow plastic such as the cowl vents and the funnel top.

Still gathering all my thoughts thinkingand parts but I hope to come back with some build info as she progresses.
