Hi I have made a butane burner from the sandy campbell design.

I didn't have any ceramic so I use some perforated stainless steel instead . I also had to use a #8 gas jet. the burner will light up but is not a steady flame. If I put some stainless fine mesh over the perforated sheet would this help.I would try ceramic with a #5 gas jet but the postal strike here hell could freeze before I can get it..

Can you describe 'Not Steady' in a bit more detail? Perforated stainless steel sounds a bit hit and miss, you need a free and uninterrupted flow of gas evenly distributed across the burner face for a good combustion.

As Andy says check the basics first such as jets are clear, gas cooling effect is not playing a part etc..
