A few questions spring to mind but we will start with:

What is a ball slipping clutch, how does it work and can you get one small enough to fit?

The gearbox to screw coupling is made in two halves and without the spring loaded ball, the two halves will not drive and just spin

One half has a shallow drilled hole and the other half has a ball held in the dimple by a compression spring

Sometimes there are numerous balls and dimples

When the drive meets an obstruction, the balls back off and the coupling slips safely

It is also called a torque limiter

          Thanks for the explanation.

Can we use such a ball slipping clutch at both the upper and lower limits of the drive or will one cancel out the other and are they small enough to fit into our system.

Now its my turn to ask for a sketch showing how this works. wink

Only one torque limiter is required ………at the gearbox end

We could also use a shear pin in the coupling to prevent damage

Have Emailed Motionco for their opinion on the gearbox selected

Making some progress with the TurboCad

You never cease to astound us……….not only are you experimenting with cutting edge science you are also teaching yourself a new type of CAD.

As you will be finding there is a huge difference between the slow and cumbersome AutoCAD and zippy fast TurboCAD, personally I would never use AutoCAD as its in built programming is to restrictive for my needs.

I look forward to seeing your first TurboCAD drawing.

Hi Bob, Good to see another of your old school 'pencilled' schematics. I am surprised there are no previous solutions you could develop in the MB library. As the modification adds loads of weight I hope there's plenty of freeboard remaining. Fill the bath-tub ! The topic reminds me of a super holiday long ago when I skimmed across the Adriatic in a flotilla of Russian hydrofoils. Very interesting thread – – – Geoff Royle

                  Welcome Flipper!

Why am I calling this visitor…."Flipper"?

About 1995, Geoff called at my house and on walking to the garage in the winter darkness……He plunged into the fish pond!

He crawled out soaked and has been called Flipper ever since!

You have forgotten your lines, Flipper!……You were supposed to make a constructive comment about the Jack mechanism!

Not to worry…..Call again, when you`ve got less time!………..(joke)
