John. Build your own. two one-piece sides, a stern and a flat bottom.. 1.5mm ply, balsa botton, balsa bulkheads.

Build it "Glynn Guest" style. An afternoons work on a sunny day with superglue and PVA or 5-min epoxy. Use sanding sealer to seal, smooth and waterproof (dries in minutes) and best halfords spray paint for under and top coat. On a hot day you could easily complete a hull ready for fitting out (and what a clever grandpa you would be!!)

Google a few images, make a sketch full size, draw in the bulkheads, draw in the gear. Design top (which you would be doing anyway) job done !

3/32" is in inches…………. It would be 2.5mm if it were metric. It's a while since we measured balsa sheet thickness in cubits.

John. Higgins boat is of course something fast and not of the cargo type, but probably more suitable for a grandson!

Things that kiddies like when looking at the boats on a Sunday.

                    A) water squirters B) speed c) figures on boats (or at least, the Mums like pointing out the little men D) crocodiles E) speed F) speed G) did I mention speed?

…and the plans, which will have a motor suggested on it! Depending on the grandson you can always fit slightly smaller motors.

Actually, have just reread the advert for the upcoming MB "special", which has free plans for a beginners steam tramp..your original choice of hull type, and a model that could be packed with interesting detail on deck, and grossly over powered to provide fun for small boys.!

I have ordered my copy despite as far as I can see there being a few questionable articles by persons who shall remain nameless..

You shouldn't worry so much after all if MB readers don't like your prose you can always try Blue Peter….

Personally I am looking forward to reading the account of a kit build from a little known but highly skilled author who had a workshop built especially for the article.

I will be very interested in the "XX" rated articles as per the pictures on the right hand side..

That said, it's a tip at the moment with three models on the go; the assorted tools and effects of the guy who's doing the garden building work (two months gone and counting), and the daily 'cooking' of SMT circuit boards for an electronics project which is still under wraps.

One is a busy bee at present, and one is happy when one is busy! Looking forward to reading how you go about designing a model – I bet it's different from Ashley's and mine.

Glynn will have made reference in the article to the type of motor and battery pack he used. If it's one of his geared-drive jobs and you don't fancy the work/noise then you could substitute a standard MFA 540/1 motor and use your 7.2v pack. In that event I'd suggest a 3 blade prop (35mm dia) although others might prefer a 2-blade type.

Design..this is an unknown word in the West Molesy boat/seaplane building yard. I start with a sketch and then see how it goes…

Two! the man is caning the expenses!

Gordon. I would totally agree with Daves suggestion, good starting point. There are loads of motors that will fit if you make a mount for a 540, and then want to up the performance, they will be a straight swap..something to note. Brass props do look the best, naturally, BUT.. Plastic two blade props are very cheap .

Possibly the biggest understatement since Columbus told his wife that he was popping out for a quick sail around the bay.
