I have just seen the advert for a Dyson cleaner claiming to have a digital motor.

        What is a digital motor?

From the lurid graphics in his adverts I would say it's just a plain, simple brushless (AC) motor. Dyson seems to have gone cordless-mad so I suppose it makes sense.

I understand why they have gone brushless/cordless as the manufacturers have all had to reduce the power consumption.

I still don't understand the Digital Motor, could it be some kind of high switching speed stepper motor?

                Hi Paul

On the Dyson site it says:

The latest Dyson digital motor is a 200W, single-phase, BLDC design that can operate at a speed of 104,000rpm (which it reaches in under a second).

BLDC is I understand from a Google search, shorthand for Brush Less DC – so presumably the motor is not that much different in the way it works from a model boat or aeroplane brushless motor.

                BLDC sounds very impressive…..

                  Hi Dave

Here I am thinking that the great inventor had come up with a totally new type of motor but it turns out that its just marketing hyperbole.(bullshine)

                  Hi Tony

                  Thanks for the link

                  Hi Paul

BLDC does sound impressive and its my kind of techno babble so I will have to include it in my next design just to perplex Bob.

BLDC………….. Bullshine Like Dyson's is Condescending.

Sir Jams is like Sir Brans – he once had a good idea and has lived off it for years. Dyson nicked the idea of using cyclones in a domestic vac from an industrial paint-spraying air filter, while it was Brans who offered Mike Oldfield a recording and distribution contract for 'Tubular Bells' when everyone else had said it was unsaleable rubbish. 41 years and 17million copies later it's still selling……………..
Dyson and Branson were both knighted and are both billionaires, whereas Oldfield's highest award was a Grammy and no-one can remember who designed the air filter.
                    Ce n'est pas magnifique…………….

Yes and Dysons latest cooling fan, Is what I expect to be none other than a modified cooander which is what we used to use as a simple cooler.

I assume Andy means the 'Coanda effect' which is the tendency of a fluid flowing over a surface to attach itself to that surface. For example airflow over the top of a wing, where it follows the curve round to the trailing edge. That is, as long as the wing is not at too great an angle to the airflow, in which case the Coanda effect breaks down, the flow separates and the wing is said to be stalled,

Well I'll be b………… I've heard of laminar flow and Venturi but that one went past me without stopping. I'll make a note for when Christmas gets too much to bear………………….

The Coanda effect is best explained in the way that F1 cars use exhaust gases to create downforce. **LINK** I tried playing around with this science with the Banshee but got side tracked into researching brushless motors.

Hi David, I`m not sure how best to describe it but here goes. A Coanda is cooling device, A cylindrical object that has a venturi with an adjustable throat, It has a connection for a small air line which is fed into the side of it to help create a swirl affect. Which when turned on,the swirling air Helps create a low pressure zone in its centre and draws more air into the throat of the venturi. In what i have observed If you put 10 lbs of air pressure in you get effectively 10lbs out, But that is across the throat of the exiting air. A considerable gain in Air for cooling. I have one somewhere I will try and route it and post a pic.

I suppose what separates people like Branson and Dyson from we plebs is the ability to see an opportunity and act on it. Branson saw the worth of Tubular Bells when no one else could, and Dyson saw the possibilities of the cyclone in vacuum cleaners. They both built empires on their foresight and became very rich men. I'm still struggling with the possibility of making my car run on fresh air, with out any success so farsad

What really separates Branson and Dyson from plebs like us is about seven billion quid. The rest – as Arthur Seaton said – is propaganda.
