I’m building a water cooled twin engine aircraft carrier. 54” total length. I’m having an issue with where to plug in the water pump. My guess is plug in to receiver. Thanks Cliff

          Hi Cliff,

I think you maybe over thinking the engine room set up ? those big motors wont be working that hard as your carrier is not that big. Water cooling is only really required on fast craft where the motors are being pushed hard.

          Regards Ray

Cliff. Ditto Ray. If they actually needed watercooling, you have the wrong setup.

i would run the thing first before fiddling around with water cooling.. I have a 96 inch destroyer on two hectoperm motors (about 50 watts each I think) and they don’t even get warm on 45mm props

Who said he was using big motors? That 385 through the quad output gearbox with 24v going through it driving four 70mm brass props might just need a little cooling!!

Perhaps you could let us know the complete set up Cliff however my learned friends are quite correct, you shouldn't need cooling.

                Hi Richard,

It's a question on another thread where Cliff has said he's using 775's for which your mentioned size of motor would be fine

We did never hear from Cliff what type of carrier he's building.

                Regards Ray

Let’s hear some good news. I have joined the Forum Post. ( Reddog’s Build ) I’ll add update along the way.

My Aircraft Carrier. The plans you see are a Battleship that I previously built.

Cliff – If your motors need water cooling, I can think of two ways of achieving that :

                    1. A pair of water scoops under the hull – these would be filled by the forward motion of the boat, a pipework coil around the motor(s) and exit out at the stern.

                    2. A separate pump, with similar pipework, driven by the ESC /main drive battery (or, perhaps, a dedicated pump battery).

I think I would try 1. first for simplicity. If the motors are getting too hot to touch after a good run, then I would consider the second option.

If you can rig up some sort of bench test for this, it could save a lot of work later on.

                    Good luck,

                    Dave

I have no idea how the motors will react. I purchased the motors as a kit. The kit came with the pump, copper coils around the motors. Since the package came with these parts I would like to use them. Direction say hook pump to battery, this would be full time running. I wanted to know if I could plug the pump into the controller or another source for intermittent operation. I was going to route the discharge hose so that is would cause a rooster tail.

                        Hi Cliff,

I've had a look at your album of photos and the hull and installation is in place, it may help others to have a look to see how far you have progressed, it sounds like you are trying to achieve a cosmetic looking rooster tail out the back which would be interesting !! (Looks good on a jet ski)

But to answer your question the water pump will need a power source ie a battery and a switch maybe operated by a servo which would be simple or a seperate speed controller which you could plug directly into your receiver.

The plan your using as a basis looks like one of Glynn Guest's flat bottomed designs so you will need plenty of ballast low down to keep it up the right way with a flight deck 17" wide.

                        Regards Ray
