As a life-long modeller but with some Health-Issues…I cut-my-teeth with Nitro-Powered aircraft, back in the 70's…I find I am taken with the idea of "playing-around" with a Boat! Something more "sedate", perhaps? I am thinking along-the-lines of converting a "Tamiya" 1/350 scale to R/C. I have a part-built (hull completed) "precedent Huntsman" (34 inch wooden hull) but am not "ready" for that, just yet. I kind-of missed-out on the "brushless-era", not to mention the miniaturisation of the radio-gear! I now imagine that there may be…"possibilities"? Now for the questions…surely I would require minimal power to drive a 1/350 scale model at scalish speeds? Where do I start? I am thinking along-the-lines of a Tamiya CVN 65 but would probably START with a BB-63 Missouri. My apologies if this is not true boat-building but I have to "cut-my-cloth"!!! I have an old "Sanwa Vanguard" home-converted to 40 MHz and a "JR X388S" converted to 2.4 GHz but, to be honest, the Radio-Link is not what is troubling-me…I need to understand the choice of MOTOR and how to gear it, etc. I really hope someone can point-me in the right direction, here. Presumably I can go "brushless" for my proposed 1/350 scale project?…I have a "700BB Turbo" waiting for my "Huntsman" but. like I said…that's a "way-off" for now! Incidentally, I am open-to-ideas if that "brushed" motor is a bad idea, but, I did spend a lot of time (back in the 90's) building a "speed-controller" for it…it would be a shame to throw all THAT away! I hope someone can make some suggestions. "confused",…James

Welcome to the Forum James, I'm sure you will get all the advice you need.

If you are looking to convert a plastic kit as a starter there are several articles describing this in the Kit and Product Reviews section under the Features tab above which will give you a feel for what is involved. There is certainly no need to go brushless for this sort of project although you can certainly do so if you wish. The main reason would be to install a physically small motor if you are short on space. Quite a bit more expensive than brushed motors though.

I would definitely go for a battleship[over an aircraft carrier as the latter will have potential stability issues for obvious reasons.

You could have a browse through the SHG Models catalogue **LINK** which includes all the bits and pieces needed for plastic model conversions. A phone call would probably give you some specific advice.

            Hi James

Welcome back to the modelling world, like you I missed the brushless motor and the new 2.4G radios with all added on bits.

But are a few years and with the help of our model boat club, I am an ex nitro to brushless person with the same speed only with less noise !!

The forum sites are a great help with info about boats, clubs and shops.

About the Huntsman, Colin is one on these!!!

I always thought that plastic magic conversions were a bit tricky, and fiddly. I can see the attraction of course. Would it be better to start a bit bigger first???   (this is a discussion point) They are also very tender on the water limiting them to clam conditions.

I have converted one plastic toy, but this is a bit chunkier than your normal styrene job.  Ashley.   Usual disclaimer applies.

I have converted the Airfix / Revell Flower kit and have had no problems with running in less than perfect conditions. Even the odd face off with Swans. It's very stable. I have also built the Revell Hermann Marwede without problems, but these are 1/72. Not tried anything like a battleship.

I have just had delivered an Italeri Schnellboot, this morning , which should keep me busy at about a metre long.

Would one of the 50 plus Eezebilt s be a easy first model? I have the Pt Boat plans at 1/35 to start hopefully soon.
