      Hello,

I’m thiniking about geting into RC warships – looking at the USS Indianapolis from WWII to be exact.  http://scaleshipyard.com/Catalog%20Pages/cruisers.html#WHU-C4

They charge $379 (US dollars) for just the prop shafts.  They describe this set as:
CA-35 CLASS PROPELLER SHAFT SET: 4 SHAFTS, 4 STERN TUBES, 4 INTER. 4 MAIN STRUTS

Those are very expensive prop shafts/tubes.  Should I go ahead and buy these or would it be OK to make my own stuffing boxes and propshafts for much cheaper? The reason I ask is becuase in the pictures these rigs looks rather complicated – not the ordinary stuffing box/shaft.

Check out the pics of these rigs:

          Q. Depends how accurate you want to be. I did see that the shafts were not stainless which is not a point in their favour. However if ordering from England, ( G.Sitek, for instance who does a great job), then you would have to be able to get the correct dimensions for shaft  and tube length, skeg supports/ “A” frames size and number, and prop size/number of blades/approx style. Although this sounds like a big deal its not so difficult, and if you ask for shafts over-length and unthreaded at the inboard end then you can adjust things a bit.If you are not so worried about Accuracy, simply glue in some ordinary nylon bearinged brass tubes/stainless shafts. For a “working” model you may opt for only two props perhaps? Ashley

                  Hi Dennis,

                  Welcome to the Forum.

Your best bet would be to start a thread under one of the Topics which most interests you and say what sort of models you like best. Then you are more likely to get some replies.
