If we were using a coal fired steam engine, it may be worth while, matey boy

But, fumes from a Diesel engine…..Ain't worth the aggro

What's this nonsense, in the broom cupboard all about then?……..Anyone?

      We are not amused

Made a start on the Fablon Oak veneer covering and it`s really nice stuff to work with

        Instant results

Will be permanent after a coat of yacht varnish

This is a tongue in cheek reference to the respect that most designers encounter, don't worry its just a black dog day.

Knowing you, Paul……..I suspect there's more to it, than meets the eye?

            Like a secret cryptic message?

Looking a bit too light and too clean, I think?

I may need to darken the wood with stained varnish and add some grime in the corners etc

SURELY you will be painting the underside of the hull a bright and dashing colour and adding a stripe to the top of the hull??? Grime…GRIME….please, no. A gentleman's cruiser would be spotless, spick and span. Ship shape and Bristol fashion etc etc

HOWEVER I see what you mean about the top. A bit light if you want my opinion. But nicely done

Are you painting the stern white or giving it the wood treatment as per the last one (that's right isn't it??) I would paint it white so it doesn't share the same styling.

                      Ashley

Ashley is right, these boats were maintained in pristine condition, if you could afford the boat you could afford the maintenance. Any signs of weathering would be quite inappropriate.

There was someone on Mayhem recently wanting to sell a steam yacht model. The model itself looked very well made but it had been heavily weathered and looked totally unrealistic, There wasn't any interest in it and that was probably why.

I think you are both right about keeping it clean

I'll make do with the varnish stain effect, the varnish should darken in the corners, hopefully?

This is the finish and colour I was aiming for……….

                                  Thanks Paul

Had a few varnish tests, but they were not up to scratch

The water based varnish didn't like the oily type Fablon surface…….I tried French Chalk on it, which helped

Tried Acrylic enhancement…….Not so clever either

                                  Will leave it till later

Any idea where the waterline will come, please?

Let me guess…….16mm from the bottom edge?

Bob. Ballast up with batteries and stuff and bung it in the water, mark waterline, choose where to paint up to, paint!!

I would want a good bit of the colour showing to make it look pretty, so an "in ballast" test would allow you to choose where the painted mark is rather than using calculation?? OR am I not being scientific enough!!

The theoretical waterline is 10mm above the chine or 70mm from base of keel but your build differs from the design so you might be better loading it up and chucking it in the bath.

                                          Hi Bob

Twin motors, twin shafts etc. The motors are in different positions and you will be using two speed controllers and two batteries so the dry weight will be different.

To fix the waterline your best course of action is to float the boat in the bath.

                                          Are you coming to Haydock?

                                            I'd forgotten about the motors

I think it may be a good idea to decide on the waterline first, just for the aesthetics and then balance to suit the waterline?

Made the window frames from 5mm plasticard angle section

Very easy to make and look very neat and very suitabell for the Cruiser build

                                                What do we think, chaps?

Hello Banjo, many thanks for looking in and your kind comments

The round window frames could be simply fabricated from sheet material

It would be nice if I had a source of white plastic round bar, then they could be made on the lathe

They could be turned from hardwood and painted……As a last resort

Are you all sorted out at home now?

We are looking forward to the final episodes of your Moonbeam build

                                                    Regards…..Bob

A very good solution for the window frames Bob. I was wondering what you might do to disguise the bare wood round the frame cut-outs. I often laminate thin mahogany onto lite-ply for superstructures and have the same problem. I'll be interested to see what you paint them with. I have used Plasticote Chrome paint in the past, which is a nice silver but not very durable.

I still have an old Maycraft Mercury to finish refurbishing and the thing that's putting me off is fabricating the twenty plus window frames!

                                                      Keep up the good work,

                                                      Ian
