      Hello Bob

Its nice to know that you are enjoying the build but rather than quirkiness wouldn't it be better to use glue?

        Hi Paul

You were very quick to spot that little opening !

Just finished the cabin planking………That Quirky Glue seems to have done a good job

Now, where did I put those blinking G clamps? Been looking for them, all day

The cabin roofs have turned out quite nice?

          Great fun easy planking project

            The moment of truth………

It took some nerve, I`ll tell you…..

            When Father Papered the Parlour….etc

Dabbin it `ere, dabbin it there, paste and paper everywhere!

There won`t be many chaps out there, familiar with this song?

Our parlour wanted papering Pa said it was waste

To call a paperhanger in and so we made some paste

He bought some rolls of paper a ladder and a brush

And with my Mummy's nightgown on at it he made a rush.

Chorus: When Father papered the parlour, you couldn't see pa for paste
Dabbing it here, dabbing it there, paste and paper everywhere
Mother was stuck to the ceiling; the kids were stuck to the floor
I never knew a blooming family so stuck up before.

                  And several verses follow….

Working on the roof still and it`s looking good

It would be very nice to see a few more builds being posted?

                            Now for the Prop Shafts

Two 500mm Prop Shafts would cost about £40.00 and I want them…..Now!

So I decided to make my own……….They are quite easy to make on the Lathe and it`s very satisfying to see the finished items, especially when the materials only cost about £8.00

                            First picture……..The materials obtained from B & Q

I`m using BDMS bar for the shafts……..It`s cheap and easy to thread compared to Stainless Steel

                            2nd Picture

The parts……..The brass bushes will be pressed in to complete the job

                                Hi Bob

Are you going to drift a bearing down into the middle of the Ali tube as a 20" shaft unsupported might whip around in the tube? If not I'd definitely prime & paint the BMS shaft cos it'll will rust fairly kwik.

                                Regards Ray

                                  Hi Ray

                                  I knew that was coming!

I've weighed it up and decided not to go to the trouble

The larger VGC has Prop Shafts about 36" long and they don't appear to whirl

There's not much of a rust problem, with all that grease and oil slopping about

                                  Bob

Its probably a mute point but why did you opt for bright bar rather than coated and pre-threaded stud bar?

                                      Hi Paul

I also bought two lengths of dead straight 4mm screwed rod, which was also galvanised, but also bought the bright bar as an alternative

I thought the screwed rod would be a nice crafty solution………..But what have we overlooked?………eh?

The screwed rod would not be watertight!………Phew !……That was a close one !

I would think that the water would get passed the thread somehow?

I could have got round it, I suppose

Looking at the finished Prop Shaft, I can see a minor problem………Can you?……..

Because the Prop Shaft has a big head……..I can't get it in the hull!

The stud bar could act as an Archimedes screw and literally pump water into the boat, either forwards or reverse depending which way the thread is orientated.

The bushing, washers, oil and grease will prevent any water ingress.

                                                  Hello Colin

You are correct in your assumption that the threaded bar turning inside a tube would create a form of Archemedes screw but with the correct bushing and PTFE seals the problem is alleviated.

Stud bar works for me especially for larger models where I build my own 10mm or 15mm dia shafts. The only difference with the large shafts is that I use outboard motor grease as the lubricant.

It`s now time to cut the slots out for the Propshafts……….They were carefully marked out on the hull bottom as per Paul`s lovely Cad drawings

Needed to hold her still during the operation, so out came Newties Clamps again, plus novel location features, Fore and Aft
