      I wonder if I can find a 1/12 scale model of a massive V engine ?

Ashley's right, the subject of lubricating prop shafts has been done to death, and it really boils down to personal preference. I have made my feelings clear, as has Ashley, so we can agree to disagree.

Regarding Ashley's comment about stainless shafts – I use nothing else, mainly because I sail almost exclusively in salt water, and have seen the effect of salt water on bright steel, and even brass, shafts.

Coming late to this build log, I skipped ahead – any chance of more progress photos? I ask out of selfishness, as I have a similar project in mind, based on a plan in an old Uffa Fox book, and need ideas.

                Hi Ian

Alas I have been mired in other matters for a while and so there hasn't been much progress aside from drawing the keel and frames.

It hasn't helped that my adept cohort is off in his luxury motorhome and busy sunning himself in North Wales (and finishing off a couple of projects in readiness for Lyme Park)

I have no doubt that usual service will be resumed during the coming weekend.

Will you post a typical cross section, please?

I like the ABELL drive combo………But oh!….Those jagged lines!

I like the ABELL drive and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

Jagged lines….how many of those sherbets have you had today? and yet my lines are squiggly and I haven't had a drink in ten years.wink

Puny?? its a 12mm tube with a 10mm shaft all in 316 grade stainless steel with custom neoprene seals and mid length bearings. It will take a real engineer to build it….do you know one?

                            Dear All

Bowing to popular opinion and upon Janes sage advice I am doing a U turn, after all its popular with politicians, and have decided to build the model at 3ft and offer the 5ft version as an option.

I still intend to use the ABELL twin motor drive so there will be plenty of power going through the single propeller.

I suppose the latest pair of MFA700 may be a suitable combo, but they are a bit expensive

Have you noticed the strange timing adjustment?

                              We'll se how they perform

Bob. I was given a special little 500 sized motor in a dinky fitted wooden box, and this has adjustable timing. I probably need 60A amp wires for it but ..

I wonder why you didnt just buy the normal 600 sort instead of these things?? they are quite expensive and my guess is they are right hot items….?

                                  Hello Ashley

We can blame the Chief Designer for this extravagaze!

We were having plain old 600's, but he said….."Why not splash out and get MFA700's?"

Got a feeling he didn't know what they were!

Anyway, we may have got the ideal motors, in this case due to the limited space left by the Brushless rubbish!

                                  No problem, Paul……We like surprises!

But it will look good blasting down the lake……how will you get on sailing it at Lyme park where the rules ban fast boats?

The following is an extract from the Etherow Model Boat Club notes on Lyme Park.

They will NOT allow any IC engines or fast speed boats, anything else is fine.

With those motors on board Brutus will definitely fall into the fast speed boat category.

                                            Dear All

Bringing the thread back to the original subject

The detailed drawings for the 1m version have started and as I haven't got the services of the workshop staff I will be doing the build blog myself.

If, as the project progresses, anyone wishes to build their own version of the cruiser I will be happy to email the drawings and templates to them, for free, so that they can do their own progressive build, it would be a bit like the Del Prado magazine builds but without the expense (you will have to buy your own materials though) all that I ask in return is, that providing you have enjoyed yourself, you make a donation to Christies hospital.

The 'build along with Paul' idea looks good on paper but could end up as a complete dogs dinner so be prepared.

If you are interested in taking part just send me a pm with your email address.

                                                Hi Bob

The motors will probably be a pair of 550s (not MFA700s) built into the ABELL drive, I will send you the keel drawing showing the prop shaft / tube so you can detail the drive unit.

To those wishing to take part in the build you need an A4 printer and Adobe Reader, the drawings, templates and instructions will be emailed in PDF format so all you have to do is print them off (no Cad or drawing software required)

For the actual build you will need a suitable building board no smaller than 1100mm x 300mm x 50mm(thick) and some decent quality 6mm ply for the keel and frames.

On the face of it there is no difference in the mounting brackets between the 550 and 555 motors
