Bob, Have you tried using 2mm ply strips ?? They would make an incredibly strong laminated stringer.

        Bob

The stringers marked red terminate by butting up to F2.

The 4x5mm laminated stringer would be useful especially on a really curvy hull, the alternative would be to steam the 10x10mm stringers to make them more flexible.

Why don`t you add notches in Former 2 for the homeless stringers?

I`m sure a third breasthook would be desirous at deck level?………Note the notch depth

It would help in the hull construction

            Bob

I will add the notches into F2 for the lower stringers, but I think that adding a third breasthook at the deck level would be counter-productive as the deck itself will form part of the structure.

We will need to add some shelving brackets to F1,F2 & F3 to support the breasthooks.

I just LOVE your idea about the ply stringers. I might even do that myself.

                Hello Paul

I did mention on the Brutus thread that the flexi stringer post should have been on this thread

At the moment, the keel has a vertical post, 40mm wide

The deck plan view has a slot 17m deep…..Leaving 23mm protruding

After chamfering, to allow for a 3mm skin, on your drawing…..There`s practically nothing left of the upright!

I can`t simply glue the skins on and chamfer back…..It needs designing first

I can do it my way, if you like?…..Which entails chamfering the upright more towards the front, chamfering the stringers and chamfering the skins…….and the skins create the bows point

Hope the helps explain the design, it is possible to have a square bow post or a chamfered bow depending upon your taste.

Thank you, Paul…..That's just what I was talking about

At least we've settled on the method……There's not much post left?

I've just started to glue and square up the frames on the Datum spine…..It's a big job and very important at this stage

                      No problem Bob

Using the chamfer method should remove 10>17mm of material from the 40mm bow post so there should be plenty of meat behind.

Hi Bob and Paul A bit down today so spent some time reading the tread. . Decided if you have the plans ready for Haydock I,ll have a set as a winter project. Now the question ,will I be able to build it plank on frame as I have never built a boat in this manner

Now I feel a lot better , gone from miserable to plain grumpywink

                          Work in progress

Having squared up the formers on the spine, I glued the bottom edges to the work surface, last night and this morning, the structure is set solid and it`s now, full steam ahead!

Glued a few stringers in place this morning, having trued up the notches, up and down a bit, left right and centre!

This is always a tricky job, deciding which areas are correct etc……..Once again, I`m impressed with the accuracy of Paul`s drawings…..Each former and notch positions etc, are dead on…..So you can cut the formers out with confidence!

I use all sorts of clamps, lacky bands, heavy weights to hold stuff in place and is not a pretty sight at times

Having a whale of a time, building Moby!

                            Hello Mike F

There won`t be any printed plan sets available at the show.

I have only one set printed off and it has been reserved for Curly, this was my original set, before deciding to build the larger model, Lady Jane 5

Paul will send you the drawings by Email…….We hope you will be making a small donation to one of the selected charities, by way of "Just Giving"………But note, a donation is not compulsory

Printing the drawings is easy, once you know the routine…..If in doubt, just ask us

Due to Paul`s tireless efforts, over the last two years, we have a good selection of models to choose from and built models will be on show also

The models are….ELLIE….RED LEADER…SEA SPRAY……BRUTUS……..THOR……LADY JANE 3, 4 and 5 and good old SloMo………And I nearly forgot the ABELL Drive sample for Lady Jane 5

We are hoping to meet all you chaps out there?………..It`ll be like a Grand Reunion!

                            Paul and Bob

                            This is Paul`s finest hour!

                              Dear All

Captain Ahab has slightly jumped the gun regarding which designs are available for download.

The Thor drawings haven't been fully detailed and The Lady Jane drawings are still very much at the prototype stage so neither of these designs are actually ready for public issue.

Good old SloMo is a Bob Abell creation and whilst the hull is fully detailed there are no drawings for the superstructure / driver / rudder assembly. The ABELL Drive doesn't have any downloadable drawings but is a fairly easy concept to understand.

Designs that are ready for download are Ellie, SeaSpray, Red Leader and Brutus.

I should also qualify Bobs statement about donations, we donate our time, skill and materials for free but there is a minimum donation of £5 per downloadable design (as giving them away would be self defeating as a fundraising exercise)

There will be a limited supply of these designs on individual CDRom's at Haydock but these will be £10 each (all proceeds going to charity)

At the moment, we are pondering the skinning or planking of this complex area?

I think, planking is quite feasible and solves a very tricky area

The planks flow nicely in the right direction and will meet the main sheeting in perfect harmony!

I can`t wait to get started and it also means, the cladding can be 3mm all over…….As per the drawing

Is that first frame the right shape? I would have thought it should be wider at both stringer positions. Planking that concave structure will be a nightmare; sooner you than me!

It does look rather hollow to me too and gives the bow a rather pinched look.

As for planking, I would imagine that double diagonal is the way to go in a complex area like that. Two layers of thin 1.5mm planks.

Thank you, Colin and Dave…..Your observations are noted

I did say, the other day that Formers 2 and 3 were in conflict!

But I suspect that Paul has done this intentionally……Haven't you, Paul?

                                                      "Of course I have!"……..he retorted

The point is, if that's the way he wants…..We can do it anyway!

The narrow necking can easily be corrected though…..Just fill in the notch

Now that the skinning problem has disappeared, I can relax and think of novelty features to be incorporated!

With the luxury of building a large boat…..I can get carried away!

Two sets of Abell Drives for starters!…..With two 12v Jellies…..Two 50mm shiny brass props

Remotely controlled water pump or pumps…..As all my boats leak!

                                                      Remote sexy hooter

                                                      Could have engine sound?

Nav lights and internal lights and since I can use Doll's house stuff……The proverbial kitchen sink!

Now doesn't that make model boat building…..FUN?

Any suggestions for further goodies chaps?……….Anything considered!…..Animated driver sounds plausible?

                                                      Happy go lucky me!
