No problem with the small 2s, I have a 3s you can try too, what can possibly go wrong ?

What size was the original glow engine & how much fuel did she carry?

200gm of battery + motor + electrics sounds to be a very large part of 350g.

Unspecified, but John Parker says anything from 50 to 90g for a 0.5 or 1cc motor, plus fuel (not a lot I dare say).

Hull is about 135g, brushless motor 55g,…servo 9g, then there’s brass for the rudders, ply for servo mount and so on, the paddle is quite substantial (I have not weighed it yet) and could be lightened a bit.

Between us we probably have a dozen or more craft with “dolls” on.

The late DM is probably turning in his grave having looked at the article!

I will be interested to see what feedback there Will be. Only positive at the pond and two shows. Moneymaker at club days and school fetes. Large paddling pool, 5 inches of water. Easy.

I can't see why the feedback should be anything other than positive. It promises to be cheap, easy & great fun for all the family.

If we want to encourage interest in Model Boats this would appear to be a good starter for 10.

I can see most people watching this (& having a go given the opportunity) for longer than a detailed scale model.

The only resistance I can forsee would be to the motor that I think I spy hanging out the bottom fully immersed in the pond water.

The brushless 28mm outrunner is very cheap. We squirt them with WD40 afterwards.

Without giving too much away, you will see why this setup has been chosen. It’s very logical.

Knowing how a bumper car works i can guess the rest but I won't say any more before the article is published.

"Very cheap" is subjective but 28xx motors have nearly doubled in price over the last year. £13 is about the cheapest available now.

How many duty cycles (using/spraying/drying) have you got on the motors?

Like you Chris, I was sceptical about immersing a motor in water especially as brushless motors have roller bearings supporting the armature, but, they work well providing you lubricate after each outing.

My Bumper boat is still running the same motor that I built it with for nearly a year now, it is rumbling a bit but it’s had a good thrashing by my 8 year old granddaughter!

If you get enough of them together it’s a bit of a hoot and you find out who’s the most competitive! 😂

It’s Putins fault. It takes a war to bump up the price of stuff from China!

A motor is a motor whether it’s in a bumper or the best build in the world, so the price is what it is unfortunately. All boats (mostly) need one so you have to pay the going rate. Our drive train is still very cheap though….

I have spent some time painting, and gluing on, some 1/200 scale bods on my Titanic. I didn’t bother originally, as it was only semi scale, but in fact the figures go well on it (about 10mm tall) and add interest, although getting the moustaches the right shape was tricky.

ok…I only stuck some on because I ordered them for something else and they were too small, I actually need some 1/150 bods, but waste not want-not!

Not so much for prices going up, though that is a good point, a few months ago I stocked up on motors and ESCs for the rest of my current and future Fairey builds and a non-Fairey project, in case supplies from China were interrupted. Might get a couple more of each and batteries.

Chris, yes get a few more, you only have five there 😲….wouldn’t last me until next March.

Stuck yet more 1/200 bods on a Titanic. 65 in all so far and I must say it doesn’t look like it! They are much too garish for the period but if they were period they wouldn’t stand out as much.

The hull sides need re-doing a bit as some of the paper ‘plating’ is showing signs of coming away at the edges. Applied Eze-kite, touched up with satin black and popping out soon to put a second EzeKote on.

That's only part of the stock Ashley and I already had the motors for the current builds. My requirements will be far less than yours!

The bumper boats are a great idea and with a number of them will be great fun. In the first photo in the mag. preview it almost looks like a real girl, great shot!

Whilst having a general google moment I saw some Barbie bumper cars…but on closer inspection they are for the “Chelsea club Barbie” which are smaller 6 inch varieties. Shame as otherwise there would have been already made bumper car top available to cut the wheels off and mount on the bumper base.

Titanic finished with the hull a bit glossy now with its EzeKote covering.

Hatch for Sonic made, just the cockpit left. Mods to get it running will not affect the top so I can finish this so at least it will look smart even though it doesn’t work!

                                          Nice morning yesterday for boating.

Sailed the Titanic. Predictable the 65 passengers and crew on deck wore less than conspicuous, but there we are.

Sonic showed promise with a couple of chuck launches, managing about 30 or 40 yards and a turn before slowing, and then virtually a large figure of eight before succumbing to a wet receiver (I did plan on putting it in a plastic bag but didn’t…

The small turn fin fitted underneath the Tup, as inspired by Harry’s Spitfire boat and it’s small sharksfin was outstanding, and has cut the radius of turn by probably a half! It’s only about 12 by 25mm. I will try one on the Swordfish as that does nothing but drift, which is fun but a bit wearing after awhile!

You should have put the passengers in the lifeboats and set them adrift. They would have been more noticeable.

For the Swordfish, may be a little larger because of the drift problem ???

You can always cut it down later if too big.

Stuck one on, about the same size but I can easily change it if it’s ineffective. The Swordfish is much lighter than the Tup (probably 1/2 the weight) but we will see if the tab needs to be bigger.

I love the Dodge-em boats and the drive train has set me thinking.

You had previously mentioned a 28mm motor which I nornally take to mean one sold as a 28XX motor (this measures the outside dimension as 28mm) The A2212 is an exception to this as whilat the outside diameter is 28mm it is sold as 22mm which is, I expect, the stator size. I has not realized that an A2212 was 28mm so my previous comment about a motor being at least £13 is wrong and an A2212 can be had for around £6.

In the article in the "Power to the people" section wou mention an X50 prop but everything else talks about an S35. These two props put very different loads on the motor. Had you tried an X50 and found it inferior?

Some years ago I tried to buy some Armafelex after your Transit Hovervan article (for a different purpose) and none of my local builders merchants stocked it. Did yours come from a national chain?

Cheers chris. The X50 was just too powerful, it was drawing 12A which is ok with the motor, but the bumper was uncontrollable. An S35 is only 3A and is ok at full throttle all the time and the bumper is controllable on it..

Yes the motor is 28mm. Its a common thing on e-bay. No idea why its marked 2212….makes no sense..

The Armaflex I had to buy via a plumbers merchant on `t internet. Its not dear, and I bought about 6m of it giving 12 bumpers worth, as you split it down the middle. Everyone has had a bit here (7 bumpers) and I still have some left. I think I asked for about £2 a split length and that covers my initial purchase price.

I used the same underwater drive, but fixed not swivelling for the Terror fish.
